A<\/span> medical columnist urges men to avoid penile injections with Trimix. He suggests that this combination of medications be used only by men who fail to get the desired results from alprostadil alone.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Keith Roach, M.D., who writes a column for the Times Colonist<\/em>\u00a0in Victoria, British Columbia,\u00a0is warning men with erectile dysfunction that Trimix injections can increase a man\u2019s risk of infection<\/a>.<\/p>\n

What Is Trimix?<\/h3>\n

According to Roach, Trimix contains alprostadil, phentolamine and papaverine. He explains that although some experts in erectile dysfunction recommend Trimix, it\u2019s typically only for men who haven\u2019t responded to alprostadil alone.<\/p>\n

\u201cI do not prescribe it because of the increased risk of infection with a compounded product and because it is not clear to me that it is more effective than alprostadil alone,\u201d says Roach. \u201cAny injection into the penis has the risk of causing a scar in the penile tissue.\u201d<\/p>\n

Viagra Works for Most Men<\/h3>\n

For most men, the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra is all that\u2019s needed to get them over their impotence. Viagra works for more than 80 percent of men and although it can have some side effects, most men say they can tolerate them well enough to keep taking Viagra.<\/p>\n

The most common side effects of Viagra include headache, upset stomach, dizziness, heartburn, flushing, runny or stuffy nose, diarrhea, and nosebleeds.<\/p>\n

Who Shouldn’t Take Viagra?<\/h3>\n

Not all men with erectile dysfunction can take Viagra. If you take nitrates, adding Viagra to the mix can cause a sudden and dangerous drop in blood pressure. Men who take medicines for pulmonary hypertension also shouldn\u2019t take Viagra.<\/p>\n

Other drugs that may interact with Viagra include alpha blockers, certain antifungals, Coumadin, certain barbiturates, HIV protease inhibitors, beta-blockers, and other erectile dysfunction medications, among others. Always go over your current medications with your doctor before taking Viagra.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s also important to discuss your past and current medical history with your medical provider before starting Viagra. Concerns include things like high or low blood pressure, a stroke, diabetes, kidney or liver disease, hemophilia, blockages of the veins in the lungs, Peyronie\u2019s disease, heart disease or heart failure, high cholesterol, blood circulation problems, retinitis pigmentosa, stomach ulcers, or allergies to medications.<\/p>\n
