R<\/span>esearch studies point to a link between gout and erectile dysfunction. One such study suggests that men with gout are more likely to develop ED than men who are free of gout.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Recent studies have found that men with gout face a higher risk of developing erectile dysfunction than men with no history of gout.<\/p>\n

For those unfamiliar with gout, it is a form of arthritis characterized by episodes of acute pain triggered by deposits of crystallized uric acid in a joint.<\/p>\n

Joints in the feet, most notably the big toe, and ankle are most often targets of gout attacks.<\/p>\n

The reasons behind the higher incidence of ED in gout patients are still uncertain, although some researchers have theorized that abnormally high levels of uric acid in the blood somehow impede blood flow. And robust blood flow is essential to normal erectile function.<\/p>\n

2 Studies Focus on Gout-ED Link<\/h3>\n

A research team led by Naomi Schlesinger, M.D., of the Division of Rheumatology at Rutgers-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School in New Jersey, conducted a study that was published in the October 2015 issue of The Journal of Rheumatology<\/em>.<\/a> The team surveyed 201 men who visited a rheumatology clinic between August 2010 and May 2013.<\/p>\n

Eighty-three of these men suffered from gout. Researchers found that 76 percent of the men with gout suffered from ED, compared with only 51 percent of the men with no history of gout.<\/p>\n

A more recent study, published in a 2017 issue of \u00a0Arthritis Research & Therapy<\/em>,<\/a> found that men with gout had a 31 percent higher risk of ED than those in the control group. Researchers, as a result, \u00a0recommended that doctors treating men with gout routinely check them also for early signs of ED.<\/p>\n

They also called for a greater study into any possible link between ED and elevated levels of uric acid (hyperuricemia) in the blood.<\/p>\n
