Millions of people in the U.S. suffer with Type 2 diabetes.\u00a0 While it was once considered an adult disease, recently a growing number of children have been diagnosed with the condition.\u00a0 According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, children and adolescents diagnosed with type 2 diabetes are generally between 10 and 19 years old, obese, and have a strong family history for type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n
The condition begins when the body develops a resistance to insulin, which results in irregular blood sugar.\u00a0 Over time the condition can lead to heart disease, blindness, and nerve and kidney damage.\u00a0 There are prescription drugs that can help manage diabetes and now the Food and Drug Administration\u00a0has approved another one.<\/p>\n
Tradjenta was given the green light by the government organization to be marketed as a treatment for those with Type 2 diabetes.<\/p>\n
“This approval provides another treatment option for the millions of Americans with Type 2 diabetes,” said Mary Parks, M.D., director of the Division of Metabolism and Endocrinology Products in the FDA\u2019s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. \u201cIt is effective when used alone or when added to existing treatment regimens.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to a recent news release, Tradjenta increases the level of hormones that stimulate the release of insulin which results in better blood glucose control.\u00a0 The new medication was tested by the FDA in eight studies, with the help of about 3,800 patients.\u00a0 The studies showed improvement in blood glucose control compared with placebo.<\/p>\n
