If you ride the subway in New York City, you may have seen ads for the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, or breast augmentation, or The Museum of Sex or the erectile dysfunction company Roman. But you haven\u2019t seen an ad for the women\u2019s sexual wellness company Unbound.<\/p>\n
What\u2019s in the ads?<\/strong><\/p>\n The Metropolitan Transportation Agency (MTA) rejected a series of hand-drawn ads for Unbound, a company that sells things like vibrators, lube and lingerie. The ads for Unbound don\u2019t contain any nudity, the word sex or anything too blatant. There are some mostly hidden sex toys in the ads, but as Bustle<\/em> reports, \u201cUnless you looked really heard (like Where\u2019s Waldo<\/em> hard, but with sex toys) or were super <\/em>familiar with current sex toys, you probably wouldn\u2019t realize what the ads were for at all.\u201d<\/p>\n Why the ads were rejected<\/strong><\/p>\n A third-party company that approved ads for the MTA determined that Unbound\u2019s ads broke a couple laws which prohibit \u201cthe dissemination of indecent material to minors\u201d and \u201cthe public display of offensive sexual material.\u201d<\/p>\n So, while Viagra and erectile dysfunction companies like Roman can openly promote their cures for erectile dysfunction, Unbound can\u2019t even promote products for sexual wellness.<\/p>\n \u201cPleasure is a really big part of sexual wellness,\u201d says Unbound\u2019s co-founder and director of content Sarah Jayne Kinney. \u201cIf it\u2019s important for someone with a penis to be able to get an erection, then women need to have access to the tools that help them get aroused.\u201d<\/p>\n Viagra is in, Unbound is out<\/strong><\/p>\n Kinney says that at first, Unbound\u2019s team was concerned they wouldn\u2019t get approved. But then they started seeing ads for Viagra, breast augmentation, The Museum of Sex and erectile dysfunction treatments and realized that ads were \u201cpush[ing] the envelope a little more.\u201d Regardless, Unbound\u2019s ads were rejected.<\/p>\n The founder of Roman admits there\u2019s still a long way to go in terms of equality in advertising these types of products. \u201cUnbound is one powerful example of this and is another strong reminder that there is still a tremendous amount of work to do,\u201d says Zachariah Reitano. \u201cViagra has been advertised for 20 years; men\u2019s health companies don\u2019t have to face the same types of challenges that women\u2019s health companies do.\u201d<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" If you ride the subway in New York City, you may have seen ads for the erectile dysfunction drug Viagra, or breast augmentation, or The Museum of Sex or the erectile dysfunction company Roman.
