Erectile dysfunction can strike men at almost any age. However, its incidence increases as men grow older. Despite the higher incidence of ED among older men, Medicare Part D drug coverage does not include Viagra or any of the other brand-name oral ED medications.<\/p>\n

In the latest edition of its \u201cMedicare Prescription Drug Benefit Manual,\u201d the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) specifically excludes \u201cagents . . . used for the treatment of sexual or erectile dysfunction\u201d from Part D coverage. <\/p>\n

However, it does allow insurers that provide Part D coverage to cover such drugs when they are prescribed to treat other health problems. For example, sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, can be covered under Part D when it is prescribed for the treatment of pulmonary arterial hypertension, a form of high blood pressure that targets the lungs.<\/p>\n

Also Sold Under Revatio Brand Name\u00a0<\/h3>\n

Pfizer markets sildenafil in 20-milligram tablets (recommended starting dose for ED treatment is 50 milligrams) under the brand name Revatio, which is prescribed specifically for the treatment of PAH. <\/p>\n

Revatio is also available in generic form, also marketed in 20-milligram tablets, the typical dose for PAH treatment. Under CMS regulations, both Revatio and its generic alternative can be covered under Medicare Part D.<\/p>\n

Because ED medications are expressly excluded from coverage, Part D policyholders will have to pay full price for Viagra. Cash prices for a single 100-milligram tablet of the brand-name drug range from $76 to $81 in the key markets of New York, Miami, Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, and Seattle. <\/p>\n

You can save by opting instead for the generic alternative to Viagra, marketed simply as sildenafil. Prices for the generic range from a low of $29 to a high of $66 in the same six markets cited above.<\/p>\n
