Medicare Part D coverage, which was inaugurated on January 1, 2006, covers a wide array of prescription drugs, thus lowering medication costs for insureds over the age of 65.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Although most Americans are aware that erectile dysfunction is not an inevitable consequence of aging, there can be little doubt that it is more common among older men. The Massachusetts Male Aging Study found that roughly 70 percent of U.S. men who are 70 or older suffer from some degree of ED, according to a report from the Cleveland Clinic<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Despite — or perhaps because of — the higher incidence of ED among older men, Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage does not cover Levitra, one of several popular ED drugs on the market. This policy isn\u2019t directed solely at Levitra, comarketed in this country by Bayer HealthCare and GlaxoSmithKline, but applies to all brand-name ED drugs.<\/p>\n

Part D Excludes Certain Classes of Drugs<\/strong><\/p>\n

As you\u2019re probably aware, optional Part D coverage covers a big chunk of the cost of many prescription drugs for Medicare recipients. However, the regulations governing Part D coverage explicitly exclude from coverage a handful of medications, including a few classes of drugs that are not considered essential for the patient\u2019s health. Included on that list are medications used to treat ED, as well as weight-loss drugs, fertility medications, and drugs used for cosmetic purposes, such as hair loss.<\/p>\n

Incidentally, \u00a0men who use Levitra, Viagra, or Cialis will soon be able to purchase generic equivalents of those drugs. In fact, generic Viagra became available in the United States in December 2017, and generic versions of both Levitra and Cialis are expected to be introduced in the fall of 2018. In the meantime, Part D policyholders who prefer to use only brand-name Levitra will pay between $594 and $631 for 10 Levitra tablets of 20 milligrams each in the key markets of Chicago, Dallas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York, and Seattle.<\/p>\n
