In many cases, these herbal remedies or dietary supplements promise all-natural cures for ED.<\/p>\n<p>However, what they actually deliver can be something quite different \u2014 and potentially dangerous.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jat\/article\/41\/3\/250\/2725389\">Desmethyl carbodenafil<\/a> is one example.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">What is Desmethyl Carbodenafil?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Desmethyl carbodenafil is a chemical compound that\u2019s structurally similar to sildenafil (Viagra). However, unlike sildenafil, desmethyl carbodenafil has not been approved by the FDA.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One example is Stiff Bull Herbal Coffee. On their website, they describe how the herbs they use are grown in Malaysian jungles and claim they\u2019ve been used for centuries to improve sexual health, including libido. Sounds harmless, right?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wrong. Read on to learn<\/span> why.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Calling Bull on Stiff Bull Herbal Coffee<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"fr-fil fr-dib aligncenter\" style=\"width: 900px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediashower.com\/img\/246C1DF0-F281-11EB-9928-8FCD0ED3A263\/AdobeStock_309286667_900x.jpg\" alt=\"Drinking a cup of coffee.\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Back in 2016, Stiff Bull Herbal Coffee made the news when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/medication-health-fraud\/public-notification-stiff-bull-herbal-coffee-contains-hidden-drug-ingredient\">FDA<\/a> issued a public notification warning people not to buy the product because it contained hidden ingredients.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the stimulatory effects of caffeine, present in most forms of coffee, the product\u2019s label indicated that it also contained herbal ingredients reputed to improve male sexual function.<\/p>\n<p>These ingredients included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Guarana<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Maca root<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\">Tongkat ali<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, as with most herbal ingredients out of the FDA\u2019s control, their safety and efficacy have never been subjected to rigorous clinical testing.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s not the worst of it. Stiff Bull Herbal Coffee and dozens of products like it contain hidden ingredients, usually chemical compounds that aren\u2019t listed on the product\u2019s label.<\/p>\n<p>In the case of this self-proclaimed ED-busting coffee, that ingredient is desmethyl carbodenafil, a chemical compound very similar to sildenafil, the active ingredient in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/erectile-dysfunction\/buy-viagra\/\">Viagra<\/a>, but one that has never been approved for use in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>But that didn\u2019t stop Stiff Bull from advertising its products as \u201cthe relationship saver\u201d and \u201cthe coffee that makes you want to stay in bed.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">So What&#8217;s the Big Deal?<\/h3>\n<p>Those wondering what\u2019s so bad about getting a Viagra-like jolt from a relatively inexpensive product should be reminded that sildenafil and compounds like it can cause very serious health consequences when used in conjunction with other medications, especially those containing nitrates.<\/p>\n<p>This is why they require prescriptions; prescriptions allow for appropriate surveillance of patients under a doctor\u2019s care.<\/p>\n<p>Both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/erectile-dysfunction\/sildenafil-citrate\/\">nitrate-based drugs and sildenafil<\/a> (as well as sildenafil analogues like desmethyl carbodenafil) lower blood pressure. Taken together, they could cause a dramatic drop in blood pressure. And if the potentially offending ingredient isn\u2019t listed on the product\u2019s label, the consumer isn\u2019t alerted to this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5313300\/\">potentially life-threatening danger<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And, again, desmethyl carbodenafil has never been approved for use in drug products by the FDA.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Stiff Bull Is Just One Example<\/h3>\n<p>Stiff Bull isn\u2019t the only product targeted by the FDA for use of undeclared ingredients. While desmethyl carbodenafil is commonly used in supplements, there are others. Some products containing hidden ingredients, like Stiff Bull, have only drawn advisories from the FDA. Many others have been recalled.<\/p>\n<p>Supplements aren\u2019t usually subject to FDA approval, so products containing drugs that are available only by prescription are considered unapproved drug products.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Although the FDA does not have the authority to approve OTC supplements, they do monitor them and add offenders to their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fda.gov\/drugs\/medication-health-fraud\/tainted-sexual-enhancement-products\">Tainted Sexual Enhancement Products<\/a> list of supplements they deem potentially unsafe.<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"fr-fil fr-dib aligncenter\" style=\"width: 900px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediashower.com\/img\/246C1DF0-F281-11EB-9928-8FCD0ED3A263\/AdobeStock_185375318_900x.jpg\" alt=\"Couple sitting at the edge of a bed cuddling.\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">A Story Ends in Tragedy<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/jat\/article\/41\/3\/250\/2725389\">In a case study published in the Journal of Analytical Toxicology in 2017<\/a>, researchers presented the case of a Hispanic male in his 30s who tragically died after taking a product containing desmethyl carbodenafil. A coroner determined his death was related to \u201cacute desmethyl carbodenafil toxicity,\u201d probably caused by a mislabeled herbal supplement.<\/p>\n<p>Tests of the man\u2019s blood indicated he had higher than normal levels of desmethyl carbodenafil in his system. As a result, it is believed that he experienced severe hypotension (low blood pressure) that caused inadequate oxygen flow to his organs and ultimately caused his death.<\/p>\n<h3 dir=\"ltr\">Buyer Beware<\/h3>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"fr-fil fr-dib aligncenter\" style=\"width: 900px;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.mediashower.com\/img\/246C1DF0-F281-11EB-9928-8FCD0ED3A263\/AdobeStock_124078141_900x.jpg\" alt=\"Couple cuddling.\" width=\"900\" height=\"600\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s hard to believe that something you could order from Amazon or find at your local gas station could be so dangerous, but that\u2019s the reality for products containing compounds like desmethyl carbodenafil.<\/p>\n<p>The best advice is to steer clear of these so-called herbal remedies and \u201cmiracle\u201d products advertised online.
