A<\/span> recent survey found that erectile dysfunction took a heavy toll on men’s self-esteem and happiness, as well as their intimate relationships. Many men find it difficult to discuss erection issues with partners and medical professionals. <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Survey responses from a study done by the ED Treatment Information Center found that erectile dysfunction weighs heavily on men\u2019s lives. More specifically, erectile dysfunction was found to negatively affect their self-esteem, confidence, and happiness, and 88 percent of the men questioned said that erectile dysfunction had \u201csome impact\u201d or a \u201cmajor impact\u201d on their relationship with their spouse or partner.<\/p>\n

When asked about their comfort discussing erectile dysfunction, many men indicated that they had feelings of shame or embarrassment.<\/p>\n

While 42 percent said they weren\u2019t comfortable talking to a doctor about their erectile dysfunction, 48.2 percent said they weren\u2019t comfortable talking to their spouse or partner about their erectile dysfunction, either.<\/p>\n

Widespread Dissatisfaction<\/h3>\n

When men did finally see a doctor or counselor to discuss their erectile dysfunction, things didn\u2019t always end well. More than 70 percent of men reported dissatisfaction with their doctors, and 78.8 percent of men reported dissatisfaction with their counselors.<\/p>\n

One treatment that works for more than 80 percent of men with erectile dysfunction is Viagra. Viagra is a vasodilator that works by relaxing the muscles in the walls of blood vessels. It was originally used to treat hypertension and angina pectoris, but one observant nurse noticed that the men being treated kept turning on their stomachs to hide their erections.<\/p>\n

Viagra is made by Pfizer, and its active ingredient is sildenafil citrate. It\u2019s not only the most popular erectile dysfunction drug in the world but also the most counterfeited.<\/p>\n

As with any medication, there can be side effects, but most are so minor that men keep taking Viagra. The most common side effects include headache, flushing, upset stomach, back or muscle pain, nausea, stuffy or a runny nose, and abnormal vision, such as changes in color vision.<\/p>\n

Some men, such as those who take nitrates or guanylate cyclase stimulators should NOT take Viagra as the combination can cause unsafe drops in blood pressure.<\/p>\n
