The Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) in Ireland recently reported that it\u2019s seen a \u201csignificant increase\u201d in the number of illegal prescription medicines<\/strong> that were found in 2017, including erectile dysfunction drugs.<\/p>\n

About 13% of the nearly one million dosage units (which includes vials, capsules, and tablets) of counterfeit or illegal medicines confiscated last year were erectile dysfunction drugs, such as Viagra.<\/p>\n

The HPRA warns that men taking these real or fake erectile dysfunction pills<\/strong> are risking their health because there\u2019s no way to know what\u2019s in the pills or how much of the active ingredient is included.<\/p>\n

The risks of fake Viagra<\/h3>\n

Too much sildenafil, the active ingredient in Viagra, for example, can be risky for anyone, but especially men who already take erectile dysfunction drugs<\/a>, or other particular medications, or men who have certain health conditions.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is of continuing concern that members of the public would use potent prescription medicines without medical supervision<\/strong>,\u201d says HPRA director of compliance John Lynch. \u201cWe also know that there is absolutely no guarantee that these products contain the type or quantity of active ingredient that\u2019s stated on the label. In some cases, they contain different substances altogether, which can have serious consequences for the health<\/strong> of those who use them.\u201d<\/p>\n

Getting Viagra in the United States<\/h3>\n

For men in the United States, the safest way to get Viagra<\/strong> is by making an appointment with your medical provider. This allows the doctor to ask questions and go over your current medications, health conditions and any underlying health problems that could be causing your erectile dysfunction<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Men who take certain medications, such as nitrates, poppers, or guanylate cyclase stimulators, for example, shouldn\u2019t take Viagra. In addition, men with certain health conditions, such as low blood pressure, kidney problems or heart problems need to be especially cautious about taking Viagra<\/a>.<\/p>\n
