Bipolar Disorder Linked to Erectile Dysfunction<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Studying more than 5,000 men with bipolar disorder from Taiwan\u2019s National Health Insurance Research Database, a study sought to assess the risk of erectile dysfunction in patients with bipolar disorder based on their treatment (antidepressants, antipsychotics and mood stabilizers) or lack of treatment.<\/p>\n

The researchers made sure to calculate other risk factors for erectile dysfunction, such as obesity,<\/strong> but still found a link between bipolar disorder and erectile dysfunction, regardless of treatment.<\/p>\n

The results were published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine <\/em>in February 2018.<\/p>\n

Treating erectile dysfunction in bipolar men<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although erectile dysfunction drugs, such as Viagra, do come with warnings regarding contraindicating medicines, bipolar drugs are not shown to interfere with Viagra. This means that men with bipolar disorder who also suffer from erectile dysfunction can probably take Viagra,<\/strong> assuming there aren\u2019t other medications or health risk factors.<\/p>\n

Other medications that may be contraindicated with Viagra include \u201cpoppers,\u201d nitrates and guanylate cyclase stimulators, as well as alpha-blockers, blood pressure medications, oral antifungals, medicines for HIV, some antibiotics and other erectile dysfunction medications<\/a>.<\/p>\n

There are also some health factors that you\u2019ll need to discuss with your doctor to help determine if Viagra will be safe for you<\/a>. These include heart problems, low blood pressure, pulmonary hypertension, recent stroke, liver or kidney programs, stomach ulcers or a bleeding problem, a deformed penis, blood cell problems, retinitis pigmentosa or severe vision loss.<\/p>\n

If your doctor gives you the green light to take Viagra, your doctor will select a dosage for you. Viagra helps more than 80% of men with erectile dysfunction;<\/strong> so if a low dosage doesn\u2019t work for you, talk to your doctor about trying a higher dosage.<\/p>\n
