Men suffering from urinary incontinence are more likely to suffer from erectile dysfunction<\/a> and other problems with sexual function than men who have no urinary problems. Both IU and ED are widely seen in older men, an association pointed up once again in a recently published study.<\/p>\n

A trio of U.K. researchers affiliated with Manchester Metropolitan University and the University of Manchester explored the link between UI and sexual dysfunction<\/strong> in older patients participating in the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ELSA). Their findings were previewed online in April 2018 in advance of publication in \u201cBJU International.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

Both Men and Women Studied<\/h3>\n

The primary subjects of the U.K. study were 141 men and 391 women, all of whom reported episodes of UI during the previous 12 months. Men with a recent history of UI reported declines in sexual desire as well as problems with erectile function<\/a> and\/or orgasm. Women suffering from recent episodes of UI reported declines in both sexual arousal and sexual activity. Subjects of both sexes were more concerned with issues of lagging sexual desire and sexual dysfunction than others who had no problems of urinary incontinence.<\/p>\n

Discussing the study\u2019s findings, lead author David M. Lee said, \u201cOur findings highlight strong links between urinary incontinence and a number of negative outcomes regarding sexual health. Both urinary incontinence and later-life sexuality remain taboo<\/strong> subjects in society and are likely to be underreported as coexisting health problems.\u201d<\/p>\n

Common in Prostate Patients<\/h3>\n

Urinary incontinence and erectile dysfunction<\/strong> are widely diagnosed as comorbid conditions in men undergoing treatment for prostate disease. This includes both benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), the noncancerous enlargement of the prostate gland, and prostate cancer, radical treatments for which can adversely affect both urinary and erectile function<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Many men with prostate cancer undergoing prostatectomy, the surgical removal of all or part of the prostate gland. Even nerve-sparing surgery can temporarily damage blood vessels or bundles of nerves, causing short-term episodes of urinary incontinence or sexual dysfunction<\/strong>, primarily in the form of erectile dysfunction. And radiation therapy, another treatment option available to prostate cancer patients, can impair blood flow to the penis, leading to erectile dysfunction.<\/p>\n

Stress vs. Urge Incontinence<\/h3>\n

Public health data indicates that up to 30 percent of all American men will suffer from some degree of erectile dysfunction during their lifetime<\/strong>, while roughly 20 percent will suffer from UI. The latter manifests itself in two primary forms: stress incontinence and urge incontinence.<\/p>\n

According to Indiana University Health<\/a>, stress incontinence occurs when urine release is triggered by any activity that stresses the pelvis. Such activities might include coughing, lifting, and any strenuous exercise involving the pelvis. A common cause of stress incontinence is a weakness of the urinary sphincter<\/strong>, the muscle that surrounds the urethra that carries urine out of the body.<\/p>\n

By contrast, urge incontinence is characterized by a sudden, irresistible urge to urinate<\/strong>, one that often results in the release of urine before a bathroom can be reached. This form of UI can be caused by an infection, irritation or disease of the bladder or a nervous system disorder.<\/p>\n

PDE5 Inhibitors Can Help<\/h3>\n

Most men with UI that has led to erection problems can temporarily regain normal erectile function<\/a> with the help of Viagra<\/a> or one of the other PDE5 inhibitors.
