Doctors tell Buchholz to ease up on pain meds after dealing with a serious case of acid reflux.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Red Sox pitcher Clay Buchholz is back on the mound, but he is still recovering from esophagitis. The condition, which can caused by acid build up, sent the pitcher to the hospital for five days.<\/p>\n

“It was really scary,” Buchholz told ESPN. “I’ve never felt the urge to pass out every time you stand up, and I really didn’t know what was going on. When the doctor said, ‘Come to my office and we’ll check you out,’ I said, \u2018I can’t get there. I can’t walk.\u201d<\/p>\n

Doctor believes pain medications were causing the problem.<\/p>\n

Buchholz stays away from pain meds<\/strong><\/p>\n

The pitcher says he is staying away from all pain meds, even Advil. He was taking Toradol, a pain reliever that is common among pitcher to deal with strained muscles. “I haven’t been taking Toradol the (entire) season,” Buchholz told ESPN<\/a> reporters. “just a couple of starts here or there. I think the Anacin and Advil caused the acid reflux more than that did.”<\/p>\n

Acid reflux also plays a role in Esophagitis. The acidic liquid that should wash into the stomach is forced up into the throat and causes damage. Chewing tobacco, which Buchholz uses, can exacerbate the problem as well.\u00a0 “I think there were five or six things that factored into it,” Buchholz said.<\/p>\n

Buccholz is not alone<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 60 million adults report suffering from acid reflux at least once per month. Many people treat the condition with a “proton pump inhibitor” that stops the back flow of acid into the throat.<\/p>\n
