According to prostate cancer expert, Dr. Michael Lazar of California, about one in seven men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer.<\/p>\n

Types of screenings<\/strong><\/p>\n

The two most common tests used to screen for prostate cancer are a digital rectal exam, in which the doctor feels for lumps and estimates the size of the prostate, and the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, which is measured by a blood sample.<\/p>\n

Produced by the prostate, PSA levels tend to increase in men with prostate cancer, though the PSA levels may also be elevated in other prostate-related conditions.<\/p>\n

There are lots of factors that can affect PSA levels. Age, race, medications, a prostate infection, an enlarged prostate and certain medical procedures can all play a role. In addition, some men\u2019s prostate glands just make more PSA. For these reasons, it\u2019s vital that only a specialist review your PSA results.<\/p>\n

Treatment options<\/strong><\/p>\n

You may have heard that some prostate cancer treatments can cause erectile dysfunction. Although this is true, there\u2019s plenty of good news.<\/p>\n

First, not all forms of treatment cause erectile dysfunction. In fact, active surveillance is now a common choice of doctors. Other treatments that are available include surgery, radiation, hormone therapy, cryotherapy (freezing), chemotherapy, high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) and biological therapy, which works with your immune system to fight cancer and\/or control the side effects of other treatments.<\/p>\n

According to Dr. Lazar, HIFU is proving to be especially effective with little to no side effects (including erectile dysfunction) in many cases. The treatment is FDA approved and uses precise and targeted ultrasound energy to destroy cancerous tissue while passing through the healthy tissue without causing damage.<\/p>\n
