Men Out-earned by Wives More Likely to Use Erectile Dysfunction Drugs<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

In a 2013 Danish study on the psychological and sexual costs of income comparison in marriage, researchers found that men out-earned by their wives were more likely to use erectile dysfunction (ED) drugs (e.g., Viagra, Cialis or Levitra) than male breadwinners, even when the earning inequity was small.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s interesting to note, however, that this wasn\u2019t the case with unmarried couples, or with men who earned less than their fianc\u00e9e prior to marriage.<\/p>\n

Times are changing<\/strong><\/p>\n

As the study\u2019s abstract, which was published along with the full article in Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin<\/em>, states: \u201cAs the percentage of wives out-earning their husbands grow, the traditional social norm of the male breadwinner is challenged. The upward income comparison of the husband may cause psychological distress that affects partners\u2019 mental and physical health in ways that affect decisions on marriage, divorce, and careers.\u201d<\/p>\n

So why would out-earned husbands need to use erectile dysfunction medications?<\/p>\n

One theory is that by losing their status as a breadwinner, they developed erectile dysfunction.<\/p>\n

Another theory is that felt pressure to showcase their virility and manliness because they were no longer the \u201cprovider\u201d for their wife and\/or family.<\/p>\n

The psychology of erectile dysfunction<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although there are plenty of physical causes of erectile dysfunction, including diabetes, Parkinson\u2019s, excessive alcohol or drugs, prostate surgery, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking and side effects from medication, there are also plenty of emotional factors that can cause ED.<\/p>\n

Depression, stress, and anxiety can all cause erectile dysfunction, and \u201cperformance anxiety\u201d can be a Catch-22: the more a man worries he\u2019ll get erectile dysfunction, the more likely he\u2019ll actually develop it.<\/p>\n

Luckily, erectile dysfunction is treatable for most men, no matter what their age. The more common erectile dysfunction drugs, such as Viagra<\/a> are all available by prescription. Just talk with your doctor.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
