S<\/span>uffering from erectile dysfunction after a botched surgical procedure, a retired barber decided to seek revenge against the doctor who had recommended the surgery. The jury at his murder trial wasn’t sympathetic and swiftly delivered a guilty verdict.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Retired barber Stanwood Elkus murdered surgeon Ronald Gilbert on January 28, 2013. It wasn\u2019t because he was mad at the $30 million offer Gilbert had just received for his pharmaceutical company and its proprietary spray for treating premature ejaculation, a common form of male sexual dysfunction. That happened the day before Gilbert was killed, and Elkus wouldn\u2019t have known about it.<\/p>\n

But the reason behind the murder does have to do with sexual dysfunction or, more specifically, erectile dysfunction.<\/p>\n

The Blame Game<\/h3>\n

According to Elkus, some 20 years earlier, the doctor, a married father of two, had suggested that Elkus undergo a procedure to widen his urethra to alleviate his symptoms of frequent urination. The surgery was a disaster, leaving Elkus with erectile dysfunction, a low sex drive, and incontinence for the next 20 years.<\/p>\n

Although Gilbert didn\u2019t perform the surgery himself, Elkus spent two decades blaming him for recommending the procedure. It didn\u2019t help that Elkus was later told by different doctors that he had been misdiagnosed and that he really shouldn\u2019t have had the surgery.<\/p>\n

Elkus also blamed the botched surgery\u2019s symptoms — including 20 years of erectile dysfunction — for his breakup with his longtime girlfriend, whom he had planned to marry.<\/p>\n

The Trial<\/h3>\n

At his trial Elkus pleaded not guilty, but no one was believing it. This had been a precisely planned murder. Elkus had gone so far as to map out directions to Gilbert\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

His lawyers decided to blame his actions on antidepressants, saying Elkus wasn\u2019t in control of his actions the day he killed Gilbert, and that the pills weakened his inhibitions. They also argued that brain damage and dementia had eroded his control and empathy.<\/p>\n

The jury wasn\u2019t hearing it. After a three-week trial, they only needed 40 minutes to deliberate before returning a guilty verdict.<\/p>\n

The argument about the lack of empathy might have been partially true. When Gilbert\u2019s wife and other family members were given the chance to speak at the sentencing hearing, Elkus took out his hearing aids.<\/p>\n
