If you\u2019re trying to lose weight, you may be thinking that sex is a great way to burn calories.<\/p>\n

It can be, but probably not as many as you\u2019re hoping for.<\/p>\n

Men Burn More Calories During Sex<\/h3>\n

A study from the University of Montreal looked at how many calories men and women burned during sex.<\/p>\n

While men burned an average of 101 calories, women only burned an average of 69 calories. Why the difference?<\/p>\n

First of all, men typically weigh more, so their energy expenditure is higher.<\/p>\n

Secondly, men may be doing more physical activity during sex, giving them more of a workout.<\/p>\n

Sex in Study Was Longer Than Average<\/h3>\n

Unfortunately, that study may not be a good gauge to measure how many calories you\u2019ll burn during sex. In that study, the average length of the interaction was 25 minutes (including foreplay). But that\u2019s much longer than average.<\/p>\n

According to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine<\/em>, the average round of intercourse lasts just six minutes. (To be fair though, that six minutes doesn\u2019t include foreplay.)<\/p>\n

Another problem with the study is that the average age for the people in the University of Montreal study was 23. Obviously, younger couples are probably going to have more \u201cactive\u201d sex than, say, a couple in their 70s.<\/p>\n

As a general rule of thumb, if you\u2019re on top, breathing hard and sweating during sex, you\u2019re probably burning more calories than if you\u2019re on the bottom and barely moving.<\/p>\n

Sex Has Plenty of Benefits<\/h3>\n

Despite the fact that sex won\u2019t necessarily burn enough calories to give you \u201cbefore\u201d and \u201cafter\u201d photos, it\u2019s still got a ton of great benefits.<\/p>\n

It can boost your mood, help you to fall asleep, decrease your risk of cancer and other diseases, and reduce stress and anxiety.<\/p>\n
