Erectile Dysfunction After Prostate Cancer? Consider Yoga<\/figcaption><\/figure>Erectile dysfunction (ED) is very common among men undergoing radiation therapy for prostate cancer\u2014up to 85%, and many men turn to Viagra, Cialis or Levitra to treat their ED. <\/p>\n

But a clinical trial from the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania found that twice-weekly yoga seemed to help with erectile dysfunction, urinary function and fatigue according to MedicalNewsToday.com<\/p>\n

The Study<\/strong><\/p>\n

The randomized trial followed men who were undergoing six to nine weeks of radiation therapy for prostate cancer.<\/p>\n

After ruling out men who had previously undergone radiation therapy, who were already practicing yoga and who had a metastatic disease, the men were divided into two groups. Group A did yoga for 75 minutes, twice a week. <\/p>\n

Each session started with five minutes of breathing and centering techniques and ended with five minutes of Savasana. Group B did not do yoga.<\/p>\n

Yoga\u2019s impact on erectile dysfunction<\/strong><\/p>\n

The men filled out questionnaires about erectile dysfunction, urinary incontinence and fatigue before starting radiation, every two weeks during radiation and after radiation was complete.<\/p>\n

The men in Group A, who did yoga, reported that their erectile dysfunction didn\u2019t change once radiation started, but Group B reported that their erectile dysfunction got worse.<\/p>\n

The researchers believe that the men in Group A didn\u2019t experience their erectile dysfunction get any worse because yoga strengthens the pelvic floor muscles.<\/p>\n

Yoga\u2019s impact on fatigue<\/strong><\/p>\n

Likewise, the men in Group A reported lower fatigue scores over time, despite starting radiation, while the men in Group B experienced greater fatigue once radiation started and as time went by.<\/p>\n

The lead investigator for the study, Neha Vapiwala, MD, an associate professor of Radiation Oncology, says that fatigue typically increases around the fourth or fifth week of a typical treatment course. \u201cBut that did no happen in the yoga group,\u201d says Vapiwala. \u201cBoth the severity of the fatigue as well as the patients\u2019 ability to go about their normal lives appeared to be positively impacted in the yoga group.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
