V<\/span>ardenafil, the active ingredient in Levitra, was found to help control premature ejaculation in clinical trials of the drug in men suffering from this common form of male sexual dysfunction. Levitra also outperformed the antidepressant Zoloft in head-to-head tests as a treatment for PE.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Although Levitra is a medication designed primarily to alleviate erectile dysfunction, a recent study seems to indicate that Levitra may also help with controlling premature ejaculation, another common problem that prevents men from enjoying a satisfying sex life.<\/p>\n

What is Premature Ejaculation?<\/h3>\n

According to the International Society of Sexual Medicine<\/a>, premature ejaculation is defined as “ejaculation that occurs within about one minute of vaginal penetration . . . or, a clinically significant and bothersome reduction in latency time, often to about three minutes or less . . . coupled with the inability to delay ejaculation on all or nearly all vaginal penetrations.”<\/p>\n

Premature ejaculation differs from erectile dysfunction because men suffering PE can get an erection, while men diagnosed with ED cannot achieve or sustain an erection. In addition, most cases of ED can be attributed to specific medical conditions or aging. Often, the exact physical<\/em> reason why some men experience premature ejaculation cannot be pinpointed and is typically attributed to extreme anxiety or a biogenic cause.<\/p>\n

How Can Levitra Help?<\/h3>\n

Physicians routinely prescribe antidepressants (Paxil, Prozac, Effexor, etc.) for men suffering PE due to anxiety issues. In addition, phosphodiesterase inhibitors such as Viagra and Levitra are also prescribed to help delay ejaculation and restore normal sexual functioning to the penis.<\/p>\n

Reporting on a study involving the efficacy of Zoloft and Levitra in treating premature ejaculation at the 2005 Annual Meeting of the American Urological Association<\/a> was Dr. Frank Sommer, a urology specialist working at Cologne, Germany’s University Medical Center. He informed AUA members that although Zoloft and Levitra improved the severity of PE episodes in 37 men, Levitra emerged as the better medication for relieving PE. In addition, subjects reported that Levitra enhanced their partner’s sexual satisfaction as well.<\/p>\n

“There is a potential usefulness of\u00a0Levitra as a promising line of therapy in premature ejaculation,” Dr. Sommer concluded.<\/p>\n
