If you didn\u2019t know that hair-loss treatments like Propecia, or urinary retention medications like Avodart may cause erectile dysfunction (ED), you\u2019re not alone.<\/p>\n

Inaccurate Labeling<\/strong><\/p>\n

Researchers at Northwestern University believe that men need better labeling for drugs that have an increased risk of causing ED.<\/p>\n

The study looked at a class of drugs called 5a-reductase inhibitors, which are used to treat two conditions:<\/p>\n

    \n
  • enlarged prostate\u2014also referred to as \u201cbenign prostatic hyperplasia\u201d (BPH)<\/li>\n
  • male pattern hair loss\u2014also referred to as \u201candrogenetic alopecia\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    The researchers found that the drugs\u2019 warnings were inaccurate.<\/p>\n

    According to an article on Healthline.com, Propecia\u2019s Full Prescribing Information (FPI), for example, states that there \u201cis no evidence of increased sexual adverse experiences with increased duration of treatment.\u201d In addition, the FPI stats that any adverse sexual side effects went away when men discontinued taking the drug.<\/p>\n

    How Bad is the Problem?<\/strong><\/p>\n

    But the researchers found that not only are 5a-reductase inhibitors linked to ED while men are taking the drugs, but also after they stopped taking them. The condition is called Persistent Erectile Dysfunction (PED) and it occurred in 1.4 percent of men who had taken 5a-reductase inhibitors. How bad was the PED? The median length of time these men experienced PED was nearly four years (1,348 days) after they stopped using the drug.<\/p>\n

    According to the research team, a man\u2019s use of a 5a-reductase inhibitor was a more accurate indicator of PED than even high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking or alcohol usage, all of which are well-known predictors of ED.<\/p>\n

    Next Steps<\/strong><\/p>\n

    To be clear, the researchers aren\u2019t calling for 5a-reductase inhibitors to be removed from the market. They simply want more accurate labeling so men can better weigh the costs and benefits of taking the drugs. It\u2019s especially important that men understand the possible long-term problems that 5a-inhibitors may cause, including ED that may not be reversible.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
