Men who suffer from premature ejaculation now have a powerful new treatment that promises to help them last up to 10 times longer in the bedroom. And the credit for this latest advance in the fight against male sexual dysfunction goes to a U.K. scientist who played a key role in the development of Viagra.<\/p>\n

Already available from a U.K.-based online pharmacy, Fortacin is a spray to be applied directly to the glans (head) of the penis five minutes before intercourse. The spray contains low doses of two local anesthetics — lidocaine and prilocaine — that desensitize the head of the penis and thus delay ejaculation.<\/p>\n

Affects Up to 40% of Men<\/h3>\n

More common than erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation is said to be the most widely observed form of sexual dysfunction in men, affecting up to 40 percent of all men. WebMD.com<\/a> defines this disorder as \u201cuncontrolled ejaculation either before or shortly after sexual penetration.\u201d Premature ejaculation occurs with only minimal sexual stimulation and results in \u201cunsatisfactory sex for both partners.\u201d The International Society of Sexual Medicine defines the disorder as ejaculation \u201cwithin a minute.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mike Wyllie served as director of biology at Pfizer\u2019s research center in Sandwich, England, from 1984 until 1994. It was during this period that Pfizer scientists, including Wyllie, discovered sildenafil citrate\u2019s unique ability to facilitate erection, even in men who had previously suffered from erectile dysfunction. This discovery led to the development and eventual marketing of Viagra, the little blue pill that revolutionized the treatment of ED.<\/p>\n

Now Heads UK Biotech Firm<\/h3>\n

Today, Wyllie is the chief scientific officer at Plethora Solutions Ltd., the company that developed Fortacin. Plethora Solutions is a small biotech company based in Chalgrove, England, located northwest of London and southeast of Oxford.<\/p>\n

Of the devastating impact of premature ejaculation on men suffering from the disorder, Wyllie told DailyMail.com that PE \u201ccan really destroy lives \u2013 to the point where some men commit suicide.\u201d While the condition is not discussed as much as erectile dysfunction, he said there is little doubt that PE \u201ccan cause the same level of distress for both a man and his partner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Results of Clinical Trials<\/h3>\n

In clinical trials, men suffering from PE who were treated with Fortacin lasted an average of five times longer after being treated for a period of roughly 90 days. Wyllie told DailyMail.com<\/a> that after nine months the average duration of intercourse for men treated with Fortacin had increased from less than a minute before treatment to an average of 8 to 10 minutes, a level considered normal.<\/p>\n

Pinpointing the cause of premature ejaculation is difficult, according to WebMD. It is more widely seen among younger men, and its incidence tends to decline as men learn to delay ejaculation and thus extend the duration of intercourse. It may happen with a new sexual partner or if it has been a long time since the last previous ejaculation.<\/p>\n

Psychological Causes<\/h3>\n

Psychological issues, such as anxiety, are said to be at the root of most premature ejaculation.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

The cause of PE can be psychological in origin, traceable to anxiety, depression, or feelings of guilt, according to WebMD. In other cases, it may be attributed to medical causes, including hormonal problems, injury, or an adverse reaction to certain medications.<\/p>\n

No matter what the cause of PE might be, Wyllie says that Fortacin could help roughly 90 percent of all men suffering from the disorder. Although it takes about five minutes for the spray to take effect, it can be used as much as two hours before sexual activity. The spray, according to Wyllie, \u201cgives users more control without reducing pleasure.\u201d Although Fortacin desensitizes the head of the penis, research findings indicate that it doesn\u2019t have a numbing effect on the man using it or his partner.<\/p>\n

Available Only by Prescription<\/h3>\n

A single dose of Fortacin, available in the United Kingdom only by prescription, consists of three spritzes of the spray to the head of the penis.<\/p>\n

As previously noted, it should be applied no less than five minutes before the anticipated start of sexual activity.<\/p>\n

Touted by Wyllie as the \u201cnext big revolution after Viagra,\u201d Fortacin is currently available only through the website of Chemist4U<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The spray is priced at just under 100 British pounds sterling, equivalent to about US$130 at current exchange rates, for a 6.5-milliliter spray canister that holds roughly 20 doses.<\/p>\n

Spray Improves Sex Lives<\/h3>\n

Wyllie said that surveys of couples who have used Fortacin indicate that the product has made their sex lives considerably more satisfying. \u201cMost said it [enjoyment of sex] had gone from a rating of 2 to 3 out of 10 to 8 or 9 out of 10,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
