Do Most Men With ED Seek Treatment?<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

If you\u2019re dealing with erectile dysfunction (or rather, NOT dealing with it), you\u2019re not alone. <\/p>\n

According to the U.S. News World Report <\/em>article, \u201cMost Men With Erectile Dysfunction Don\u2019t Seem to Get Treatment,\u201d in a study of 6 million patients aged 30 and older who received a diagnosis of erectile dysfunction, 75% either didn\u2019t receive or didn\u2019t fill prescriptions.<\/p>\n

Who is least likely to get treated?<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to Dr. Brian Helfand, lead researcher of the study, older men were the least likely to get treated. In fact, only 18% of men 65 and older were treated.<\/p>\n

The percentage is even lower for men with prostate cancer. Only 15% were treated for ED.<\/p>\n

Why don\u2019t men get treatment for ED?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Helfand has several theories about why men aren\u2019t being treated for impotence. <\/p>\n

If the doctor isn\u2019t writing a prescription, it could be because they don\u2019t think the man is a candidate for ED drugs, or because they didn\u2019t respond to ED drugs in the past.<\/p>\n

According to Helfand, if the men did<\/em> receive a prescription but didn\u2019t follow through to get it filled at a pharmacy, it could be due to embarrassment. It could also be due to costs, as some ED drugs are as high as $50 a pill.<\/p>\n

Other explanations<\/strong><\/p>\n

Dr. Jacob Rajfer, a professor of urology with David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles is hesitant to draw the conclusion that three in four men who have an ED diagnosis are not treated. <\/p>\n

In the U.S. News World Report<\/em> article, he points out that those statistics don\u2019t fit with what he sees in clinical practice. \u201cIn order to determine how many men were treated or not treated,\u201d he said, \u201cyou need to interview the people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dr. Rajfer\u2019s argument is that men may go out of the country to get cheaper ED drugs or get them by mail order.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
