Wherever there are prescription drugs that make money, there will be imitations. <\/p>\n

While some of these \u201calternative options\u201d may be written off as little more than financial losses and harmless placebos, others can be dangerous\u2014and even deadly.<\/p>\n

Why \u201cherbal\u201d doesn\u2019t always mean safe<\/strong><\/p>\n

Such is the case with herbal pills being marketed as cures for erectile dysfunction (ED). <\/p>\n

While most people assume that anything labeled \u201cherbal\u201d or \u201cnatural\u201d is safe, that\u2019s not always the case.<\/p>\n

The FDA found 300 herbal products containing hidden prescription drugs, such as Viagra and Cialis. <\/p>\n

Regulators were shocked to find that one product had 31 times the standard dose of tadalafil (the active ingredient in Cialis). <\/p>\n

For people with high blood pressure or diabetes, this can be extremely dangerous. Fake ED \u201ccures\u201d have led to stroke, livery injury, kidney failure and death.<\/p>\n

Other fake drugs coming from China were found to contain flour and gypsum drywall powder.<\/p>\n

How do you know what\u2019s safe<\/strong><\/p>\n

The FDA has warned the general public that reading labels doesn\u2019t always tell the real story about which drugs or ingredients are in so-called \u201cherbal ED pills.\u201d<\/p>\n

Men looking to treat erectile dysfunction should talk to their doctor and ask if a prescription for Viagra or Cialis is right for them.<\/p>\n

On its website for Viagra, manufacturer Pfizer warns consumers about the dangers of buying counterfeit pills for impotence. A few of their warnings:<\/p>\n

  • Viagra is one of the most counterfeited drugs in the world.<\/li>\n
  • Almost 80% of sites surveyed claiming to sell Viagra were selling counterfeits.<\/li>\n
  • The FDA has never approved a \u201cgeneric Viagra,\u201d so if you see it for sale, don\u2019t buy it!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    What should you look for when buying Viagra online<\/strong><\/p>\n

    • Make sure the website requires a valid prescription.<\/li>\n
    • Look for a U.S. phone number and address.<\/li>\n
    • Viagra only comes in 25 mg, 50 mg and 100 mg tablets.<\/li>\n
