\"\"<\/a>A new study shows people caring for a stroke survivor are at a higher risk of depression. More than 80 percent of stroke<\/a> patients are cared for by a family member and the Loyola study shows those caregivers handle an enormous amount of stress, which can lead to depression.<\/p>\n

The study<\/strong><\/p>\n

Through surveys, researchers concluded that the burden of caring for a loved one impacted their daily lives. Aside from stress, lack of sleep, decreased social activity, financial strain, home confinement, changes in the relationship with the care recipient, noncompliance of the stroke survivor, demands of caring for the stroke victim and having little personal time for oneself were among the symptoms expressed by caregivers.<\/p>\n

\u201cStroke survivors can suffer significant and lasting disabilities that may require lifelong support from family and other caregivers,\u201d said Karen Saban, PhD, RN, APRN, CNRN, lead author and associate professor, Loyola University Chicago Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing. \u201cMany families struggle to provide 24-hour care for their loved ones. This burden places the caregivers at risk for depression, anxiety and sleep disturbances, which can harm quality of life and heighten their risk for other health problems.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hope for the future<\/strong><\/p>\n

The study points to a need for more assistance. While family members often take on the burden, outside assistance may be needed. There are resources for people who need help caring for stroke patients<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>One day off for a caregiver could alleviate some of the pressure. Many women try to take on other\u2019s troubles and attempt to push through the struggle, sometimes reluctant to ask for help. Family should recognize this stress and help as needed, experts say.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis was one of the first studies to look at the unique needs of women caring for stroke survivors,\u201d Saban said. \u201cRecognizing the challenges of these caregivers may help health-care professionals better support these women.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
