\u201cAllergic rhinitis is a trivialized disease,\u201d Jonathan A. Bernstein, MD, an allergist at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine tells WebMD<\/a>. \u201cObviously, nobody dies from it. But it does cause a tremendous amount of sickness and suffering.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAllergic rhinitis is a treatable problem,\u201d Bernstein says, \u201cand when people get diagnosed and treated properly, they do very well.\u201d<\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a look at treatment options:<\/p>\n

Antihistamines<\/strong><\/p>\n

A chemical in your body called histamine is what triggers your body\u2019s response to allergens. An antihistamine blocks this reaction. Zyrtec, Allegra, Claritin, and Benadryl are all examples.<\/p>\n

Decongestants<\/strong><\/p>\n

Antihistamines don\u2019t relieve congestion. If you need to relieve congestion, a decongestant is the answer. They can reduce swelling in the nasal passages. Sudafed is common over-the-counter decongestant.<\/p>\n

Nasal sprays<\/strong><\/p>\n

A prescription strength nasal spray is a common treatment for allergy symptoms because it is effective in treating many side effects.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe great thing about steroid sprays is that with just one medication, you can treat the congestion, the itchiness, and the sneezing,\u201d says Corinna Bowser, MD, an allergist in Narbeth, Pa.<\/p>\n

Nasacort, a nasal steroid, is available over-the-counter, but others like Flonase require a prescription.<\/p>\n

Prescription meds<\/strong><\/p>\n

There are prescription strength antihistamines and decongestants too. Your doctor can access the severity of your allergy symptoms and prescribe medications like Clarinex, if needed.<\/p>\n

Nasal irrigation is one way to fight congestion brought on by allergies.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

Nasal irrigation<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s not one of the prettiest treatments, but irrigating your nasal passages with salt water can also help.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome trials found that nasal irrigation works as well as antihistamines in reducing symptoms,\u201d says Bowser. There\u2019s evidence that it relieves sinus symptoms, too.<\/p>\n

The salt water clears the allergens that are causing the reaction. Get rid of the allergens and you\u2019ll feel better.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s just like cleaning your furnace filter,\u201d says Bernstein. \u201cIf you want good air quality in your home — or your lungs — the filters have to be clean.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
