A new study shows that men who claim erectile dysfunction medications aren\u2019t working, might be taking them incorrectly.<\/p>\n

Where did the idea for this study come from?<\/b><\/p>\n

Dr. Borja Garcia Gomez, the author of the new study<\/a> from the Hospital Universitario 12 de Octubre in Madrid, says the hospital noticed more and more complaints about failed ED meds. Gomez decided to investigate and found many men weren\u2019t taking the meds the way they were intended.<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the wrong way to take ED meds?<\/b><\/p>\n

Gomez and her team recruited 250 men who had erectile dysfunction and claimed the medications they were prescribed weren\u2019t working. Men completed a survey and the results showed that 172 (or about 68 percent) of the 250 men weren\u2019t taking the medication under the \u201cbest conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n

For instance, some didn\u2019t give the medicine the right amount of time to kick in. Others didn\u2019t realize they needed sexual stimulation for the medication to work. Others weren\u2019t taking the full dose, hoping a smaller dose would work. By taking a smaller dose, or cutting pills in half, men hoped to save a few bucks.<\/p>\n

Men who weren\u2019t taking the medication correctly were offered a re-education class to teach them how and when to take pills like Viagra and Cialis. After the class, about 75 percent of men responded to the meds.<\/p>\n

Dr. Joseph P. Alukal, from the Departments of Urology and Obstetrics and Gynecology at NYU Langone Medical Center in New York, said the new findings weren\u2019t surprising.<\/p>\n

\u201cLots of people don’t know how to prescribe or take these drugs,\u201d Alukal, who wasn\u2019t involved in the study, told Reuters Health in an email. \u201cI try to educate both patients and providers about these kinds of pitfalls.\u201d<\/p>\n
