Men with prostate cancer often deal with erectile dysfunction as a side effect of radiation therapy.<\/figcaption><\/figure> Men diagnosed with prostate cancer are often treated with radiation. This treatment, designed to kill cancer cells, has a lot of side effects – one of which is erectile dysfunction. About 40 percent of men undergoing radiation therapy for prostate cancer suffer from erectile dysfunction, or ED, after the treatment.<\/p>\n

In an attempt to prevent erectile dysfunction, doctors prescribed patients undergoing radiation Cialis.<\/p>\n

The results<\/strong><\/p>\n

A group of 242 men undergoing radiation treatment were given Cialis or a placebo for 24 weeks. The medication started at the same time as the radiation treatment. The hope was that Cialis would prevent ED from setting in, but the study shows there was little difference between the men taking Cialis and the men taking the placebo.<\/p>\n

According to WebMD<\/a>, which published the findings, 79 percent of those who received Cialis maintained erectile function compared with 74 percent of those who received placebo – a difference of 5 percent. A year later, there was little change.<\/p>\n

Other ED treatments may be an option<\/strong><\/p>\n

While the study suggests that Cialis can\u2019t prevent ED in prostate cancer patients, it doesn\u2019t mean that other treatments won\u2019t work. There are other options, researchers say. <\/p>\n

There are other treatment options for ED besides oral medications.<\/figcaption><\/figure> However, the first goal for men in this situation should be to treat the cancer first, Dr. Bruce Gilbert, director of reproductive and sexual medicine at North Shore LIJ Health System, says.<\/p>\n

“Whether you have radiation or surgery you are going to have some impairment in your erections. When you are treating a cancer, you are treating the cancer. The side effects can be dealt with after,” he said.<\/p>\n

“With sexual function, we can get most people working again. We use a variety of medications, possibly injected medications, or other alternatives that we have.”<\/p>\n
