A study suggests costs and embarrassment are preventing men from filling prescriptions to treat erectile dysfunction, or ED. The research suggests that 75 percent of men with impotence are going to the doctor but aren’t filling their prescription.<\/p>\n

Brian Helfand, an assistant clinical professor of urology at Northshore University Health System and the University of Chicago told MSN<\/a> that \u201cerection treatments overall, are underutilized.\u201d<\/p>\n

Helfand looked through insurance claims for an erection problems diagnosis and found 6.2 million men had been diagnosed with the condition between June 2010 and July 2011, but just 25 percent of patients actually took the steps to fill their prescription.<\/p>\n

Further analysis shows men 65 years and older are only more likely to have erection issues, but they are least likely to fill a prescription for treatment.<\/p>\n

Why would men refuse to fill a prescription?<\/b><\/p>\n

There could be several barriers keeping men from filling their prescriptions, one of which is cost. While the prices vary on each erection medication, some men consider this kind of lifestyle medication a luxury and don\u2019t want to spend the extra cash to pay for it, say experts.<\/p>\n

Others might be embarrassed. Sexual problems are taboo topics for some men.<\/p>\n

Helfand says the takeaway message from his research should be that, \u201cthere are available therapies out there.\u201d<\/p>\n

What medications are available to treat ED?<\/b><\/p>\n

There are several treatments for ED. The easiest treatment is an oral medication. There are five FDA approved medications: Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, Stayxn and Stendra. While these medications work for most men, there are other options if prescriptions don’t work. A change in diet or exercise could help. Implants could be an option.
