It\u2019s not just Goldstein\u2019s study that shows problems. Last month, the National Association of Boards of Pharmacy, the agency that accredits online pharmacies, said 97 percent of the more than 10,000 online sites selling prescription medications are doing so illegally.<\/p>\n

Harmful ingredients in medications<\/strong><\/p>\n

Roger Bate, a scholar at the American\u00a0Enterprise\u00a0Institute and author of Phake: The Deadly World of Falsified and Substandard Medicines<\/a>, says there are serious consequences to taking these fake meds.<\/p>\n

\u201cMost men assume that the worst that could happen with fake Viagra is that it simply won\u2019t work,\u201d he said. \u201cBut the opposite may be just as true, and much more dangerous \u2013 the drug can be super potent, with the potential to trigger a heart attack.\u201d<\/p>\n

Researchers have found printer ink, dry wall, random antibiotics and amphetamines in some of the counterfeit pills.<\/p>\n

The problem will grow<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bates expects the problem will only get worse. \u201cThe market is huge, the chance of being caught is low and the penalties are very trivial,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

While many agree more enforcement is needed, it\u2019s not easy to regulate.<\/p>\n
