The panel\u2019s recommendations<\/strong><\/p>\n

Even if preliminary tests show no heart complications, the panel wants drug makers to complete additional tests to ensure patient\u2019s safety.<\/p>\n

\u201cGiven the checkered history of dieting drugs, I think it is better to be prudent and err on the side of caution,\u201d Dr. Sanjay Kaul, a cardiologist at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said at the end of the two-day meeting in Silver Spring, Md.<\/p>\n

But some committee members believe these additional tests will increase the time and cost of developing weight-loss drugs and discourage pharmaceutical companies from making them.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf the F.D.A. follows through with this vote, you\u2019ve just added another big disincentive for the drug companies to come up with obesity drugs, and we desperately need new drugs,\u201d said Dr. Ed J. Hendricks, an obesity specialist in Sacramento, who voted with the minority.<\/p>\n
