Dr. Ian White, a dermatologist at St. Thomas\u2019 Hospital, says a recent investigation shows 36 chemicals in hair dye that could trigger a fatal allergic reaction.<\/p>\n

Ingredients in Hair Dye<\/strong>
\nWhite says the do-it-yourself hair dye products found at most department stores may not be safe. Products that offer ‘permanent color’ that turn hair brown or black are the biggest offenders, according to White.<\/p>\n

In 2011, the European Commission forced the makers of hair dyes to place warnings on their products; however, White says the label isn\u2019t visible enough and should be moved.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe new warning is on the side,\u201d he told The Mail<\/a> on Sunday. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t hit you in the face like a cigarette warning does. We need to make the warnings explicit. Consumers are not as effectively protected as they should be.\u201d<\/p>\n

European Commission estimates that between one in 50 and one in 100 people who use hair dyes suffer from an allergic reaction to them at some point.<\/p>\n

\n Researchers are still investigating the link between hair dye and allergies.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n

According to The Mail, two British women have died from an allergic reaction that could have been caused by chemicals found in hair dye. In 2011, Julie McCabe started having trouble breathing while she was coloring her hair. She was taken to the hospital where she fell into a coma for a year and died in November.<\/p>\n

In a similar case, a teenager collapsed while coloring her hair. Tabatha McCourt died at a hospital hours later.<\/p>\n

L\u2019Oreal responds<\/strong><\/p>\n

A L\u2019Oreal spokesman said: \u201cWe are confident the warnings and advice on our product packs are sufficient to inform people of the risks and they clearly state the importance of carrying out an allergy test 48 hours before using the colorant.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
