Apes trapped in war-torn Congo are shrinking in population.<\/figcaption><\/figure> A group of \u201cpeace-loving\u201d apes are stuck in the middle of a war torn area in Africa. Bonobos, known as the hippies of the ape kingdom, aren\u2019t aggressive and yet, they are losing their homeland to violence. A bloody civil war has raged on for a decade in the Congo, where Bonobs live. Now, conservationists say the population is dropping to dangerously low levels.<\/p>\n

Poached and Sold<\/strong><\/p>\n

Bonobos and other wildlife are killed and sold in the bushmeat trade in Africa. It has shrunk the ape population drastically, according to CNN<\/a>. Unfortunately, no one knows the exact number of Bonobos because the area is full of rebel soldiers, making it too dangerous for experts to study the population.<\/p>\n

“The decade of war in the late 1990s resulted in extensive population displacement, military\/rebel movements and a greater availability of firearms and ammunition, which contributed to increased hunting of wildlife, including bonobos,” says Dominique Morel, of Friends of Bonobos, a group supporting Lola Ya Bonobo<\/span>, the world’s first and only sanctuary for the endangered species.<\/p>\n

A Sanctuary for Bonobos<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lola Ya Bonobo takes in injured and orphaned bonobos and attempts to help them and release them back into the wild.<\/p>\n

“Conservation asks us to make a test for reintroduction in the wild,” says Andre. “So we make this experience two times already since 2009, a group of bonobos from here, returned to the wild. And for them it was a success because after two-three months, they are home.”<\/p>\n

While the program can boast some success, the funds aren\u2019t there to support the facility.<\/p>\n

“Advocating for wildlife conservation is always a battle in poor areas,” says Morel. “In times of crisis, when the security and basic needs of civilian populations are often not<\/p>\n

assured, it becomes even more challenging. If eco-guards and staff have to be evacuated from certain areas for their own safety, equipment, infrastructure and sometimes animals suffer.<\/p>\n

“Only with peace and stability can long-term investments in wildlife conservation — research, conservation education, community-based habitat protection and eco-tourism — be successfully implemented.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
