The current school of thought<\/strong><\/p>\n

Research shows that obese women are less likely to have a spontaneous birth, so many doctors encourage women to control their weight and diet as a way to combat the potential for giving birth early. However, David Hackey, a high risk pregnancy expert says otherwise.<\/p>\n

What new research shows<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cUsually, weight gain and being overweight or obese is protective against spontaneous preterm birth. In fact, the risk of unexpected labor and delivery is 20 percent lower in obese than non-obese women,\u201d said Hackney.<\/p>\n

\"\"\u201cWe\u2019d hoped to find that women were at greater risk of repeat preterm birth if they had a lower rate of weight gain in their second pregnancy, meaning patients could potentially decrease their risk by ensuring they gained an appropriate amount of weight. But, our research suggests you can\u2019t alter risk through changes in weight or diet.\u201d<\/p>\n

The study included 166 women who delivered their first and second babies at the University of Rochester Medical Center between 2004 and 2010. All participants delivered their first baby preterm, and close to 29 percent delivered their second baby preterm as well. Other studies<\/a> have looked into ways to reduce the risk of premature birth as well.<\/p>\n

Hackney believes pregnant women should talk to their doctor about any concerns and encourages all expectant mothers to follow the normal guidelines of weight gain while carrying a child.<\/p>\n

Preemies and the problems they face<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in eight babies are born premature, which leaves them more susceptible to health problems<\/a> and learning problems later on in life.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
