Brain activity is affected by cell phone use, according to a credible new study that proves the newly discovered phenomenon. National Institutes of Health researchers found that the human brain\u2019s activity is increased by 7 percent near the area where electromagnetic radiation is emitted from cell phones. This activity, translated scientifically, means that the brain consumes more glucose (sugar).<\/p>\n
Unfortunately, the new information gleaned from this study cannot be used to infer whether or not increased brain activity from cell phones is harmful to humans. However, the researchers said the study\u2019s findings call for more research in this area.<\/p>\n
The Food and Drug Administration, American Cancer Society and National Cancer Institute, among other top medical groups, are on the record as stating that existing data from cell phones studies has been reassuring in terms of human safety. There are a few studies that link cell phones to rare brain tumors, a major European study<\/a> released by the World Health Organization in 2010 refuted those studies.<\/p>\n Scientists have stated again and again that the nonionizing radiation emitted by cell phones consists of waves of energy so weak they cannot break chemical bonds or cause DNA damage known to cause cancers. In the recent study, 47 participants underwent positron emission tomography (PET scans) in order to measure brain glucose metabolism, which is an indicator for brain activity. A cell phone was placed next to both ears of each participant for two 50-minute scans. There is speculation that an artificial increase in brain glucose metabolism may be harmful because it could foster the creation of free radical molecules, which in abundance can damage healthy cells.
