A 24 percent decline in the number of heart-attack hospitalizations was displayed by members of Kaiser Permanente between 2000 and 2008. The Medicare study released in April focused on the elderly of course, and its number were almost an exact match — heart-attack hospitalizations were down by 23 percent.<\/p>\n
Doctors who were familiar with the study attributed the sharp drop in heart attacks to improved control of certain risk factors — including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, as well as reduced smoking (including in public places), healthier diets and increased exercise. The Kaiser Permanente study revealed that the incidence of heart attacks within the plan dropped from 287 events per 100,000 person-years in 2000 to 208 events per 100,000 person-years in 2008. The rate of death within 30 days decreased from 10.5 percent to 7.8 percent from 1999 to 2008. One of the most promising statistics to be gleaned from the Kaiser study was that the rate of the most severe kind of heart attacks, called STEMI (segment elevation myocardial infarction), were reduced by 62 percent.<\/p>\n
Heart disease has been the leading cause of death for Americans for many decades. The Kaiser and Medicare studies show that preventive care really is an effective way to improve certain factors that are known to contribute to heart attacks. Take as an example the more than 4,000 Kaiser enrollees who were hospitalized for heart attacks in 2008: 76 percent had poorly controlled high blood pressure, 80 percent had high LDL cholesterol and 32 percent had diabetes.<\/p>\n
