Moving on… Despite the fact that most folks who track\u00a0spam numbers say that between 95-97% of all emails sent throughout the world are considered to be spam,\u00a0there was good news for people who despise getting Viagra erectile dysfunction\u00a0spam\u00a0this week… and then today there was bad news.<\/p>\n
First, the good news…<\/strong><\/p>\n A\u00a0Microsoft security report<\/a> announced that\u00a0the volume of spam for sexual medications fell a dramatic two-thirds when comparing the first six months of 2008 to the last six months.\u00a0<\/p>\n In fact, spam for\u00a0erectile dysfunction medications such as Viagra\u00a0was the most popular type of\u00a0spam message from January to June 2008,\u00a0comprising a 30% share of the total volume. In the second half of 2008, the volume dropped below 10%.<\/p>\n Helping to make up the difference, however, were non-sexual medication spam messages. These\u00a0nearly doubled in the second half of 2008. So spam emails for hair products, weight loss, vitamins and everything else non-ED saw a\u00a0100 percent increase during the second\u00a0half of\u00a02008, which means it made up 40 percent of all spam during that time period.<\/p>\n Check out all the interesting details in Lawrence Walsh’s blog<\/a> posted yesterday.<\/p>\n Despite the drop in ED spam, the spam monster is still apparently live and well, even though spam volume apparently dropped sharply in Novermber when major spam botnets were disabled\u00a0due to the McColo network being\u00a0shut down, according to the security folks at Marshal. If you want spam stats, including where most of it comes from, and spam trends, check out their site<\/a>.<\/p>\n And now for the bad news… An article on Computer World today announced that there could be millions of\u00a0Windows PCs infected with the Conficker worm, which has\u00a0turned these PCs into junk mail-spewing robots capable of sending billions of spam messages<\/a> a day. This is all according to a Russian security company. Some PCs\/bots could be sending out 80,000 spam messages in a 24-hour period, it says.<\/p>\n And guess what… all of the spam associated with the Conficker worm is ED-related. One step forward and two steps back apparently.<\/p>\n I guess the point is that if you have a Windows PC, you may want to do a security check every once\u00a0in a\u00a0while. I just clicked over to the company that provides the free\u00a0security\/anti-virus\u00a0software\u00a0for my PC…\u00a0and that’s AVG<\/a>. Guess what’s on the homepage right now… the Conficker virus.<\/p>\n Some of these viruses really are monsters. And so are the companies that power the spambots by providing the spam content in the first place.
