There is no cure for genital herpes, but there are medicines that aid in reducing the symptoms and the number of outbreaks.

Acyclovir is one of the medicines available which temporarily stops the spread of the virus, so the frequency of the outbreak can be kept at a bare minimum. Below are some frequently asked questions about Acyclovir that should help answer any questions regarding this form of medicinal suppression therapy.

Do I have to take Acyclovir with a full stomach?
Yes, because it lessens the chance that you will get an upset stomach. Also make sure and drink plenty of water to ensure that your kidneys absorb the medicine properly.

What are the different doses of Acyclovir?
The pill comes in 200, 400 and 800 mg tablets, prescribed at your doctor’s discretion.

What do Acyclovir pills look like?
The 200mg prescription comes in blue capsules. The 400 mg in white shield-shape tablets, the 800 mg in light-blue, oval tablets and a suspension of 200 mg/5mL comes in an off-white colored tablet.

How long should I take Acyclovir?
You have to finish the prescribed number of Acyclovir pills that your doctor advises you to take even if you start to feel better. The symptoms may go away after a few days of taking the medicine, but it does not mean that the infection is completely treated. During your initial outbreak the medicine has to be taken for about 7-10 days. If the sores have not healed after 10 days, the doctor will extend the duration of the treatment. For episodic treatment Acyclovir can be taken five times a day. If you are taking it as a suppressive treatment, intake can be two-four times a day. However, the dose for people with kidney problems can be lower or adjusted accordingly by the treating doctor.

Do I have to take Acyclovir regularly?
Acyclovir should only be taken as prescribed and directed by your doctor. Depending on the severity of your condition, your physician may advise different dosage levels.

What are the common side effects of Acyclovir?
Nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. While the side effects are usually mild, some of the long-term side effects may also include a minor skin rash.

What are the symptoms of Acyclovir overdose?
The symptoms may include one or more of the following: agitation, seizures, extreme fatigue, unconscious state, infrequent urination, swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs. If you suffer from any side effects make sure to contact your physician immediately.

Where can I buy Acyclovir online?
You can order Acyclovir by visiting your primary care physician and obtaining a prescription or you can order through a secure online pharmacy, such as eDrugstore.com. Purchasing medications through a reputable online drugstore is easy, safe, and discreet, making it an appealing way to acquire your treatments.

Reviewed by: Daniel Williams, MD Genital herpes is a sexually transmitted disease that produces blisters or sores on one’s body in the pubic region.
