Nearly eradicated a decade ago, reports of a new bedbug infestation are on the rise. In New York, homes, businesses, and schools alike are being assaulted by these insidious pests, burrowing themselves into some of the most popular spots in Midtown Manhattan. This year many marquee stores, including the 95,000 square foot Niketown, were shut down due to bedbug infestations. The Nike store in particular required seven to ten days of treatment as a result of its inordinate size. Hotels and dorm rooms in neighboring universities were also affected, with many of the horror stories posted onto bedbug websites. The presence of bedbugs in hotels is particularly alarming, as tourists can unintentionally transport the bugs to other locations worldwide. Reports are stating the bed bug crisis has spread throughout the northeast, from college dorms in Pennsylvania and North Carolina to the marine corps barracks at Camp Lejeune.<\/p>\n

According to leading pest control companies, New York is the number one bedbug infested city, while Ohio is the number one state. On the western half of the United States, Denver and Los Angeles are both in the top 10 infested cities, at six and ten respectively.<\/p>\n

Many entomologists believe it is a pand\"\"emic that will persist for many years to come. As tourism in major cities increases, many vacationers will unwillingly bring bedbugs into their homes, quickly spreading and rooting themselves in suburban communities. Statistics show that in the past year 95 percent of all pest control companies have performed bedbug eradication, the costs of which running over $258 million last year. On average, the price of ridding a moderately sized house of bedbugs can be quite expensive, about $2000 for a single treatment.<\/p>\n

In response, leading experts have gathered in Chicago for a two day summit on the ongoing crisis. The floor of the summit was filled with technological gadgets. Room heaters to bake the bugs, CO2 sprayers<\/p>\n

to freeze them. There were steamers to boil them, and plastic barriers to prevent them from reaching your bed. There were even dogs trained to sniff them out. While there is no guaranteed method to avoiding bedbugs, many experts suggest immediately washing all clothes after a trip and vacuuming your luggage.
