Cialis, the prescription drug used to treat erectile dysfunction, ranked 56th<\/a> on the Drugs.com list of top 100 drugs for the first quarter of 2013, based on units sold. It even bested rival Viagra, which ranked 69th.<\/p>\n

In terms of sales figures<\/a>, Viagra still outranks Cialis, ranking 45th to Cialis\u2019s 57th. However, sales of Cialis have trended upward and can be expected to continue to do so, partly due to Viagra going off-patent in a number of European countries in June. Another factor that may push Cialis sales is a new study<\/a> published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine<\/em> showing that when taken daily (rather than on an as-needed basis), Cialis helped men return to normal erectile functioning.<\/p>\n

The Study<\/h3>\n

Dr. Edward D. Kim, MD, of the Division of Urology, Department of Surgery, University of Tennessee Graduate School of Medicine was lead author of the study, which included 623 men over age 18, and which was conducted at 51 sites. The study\u2019s main objective was determining whether men who had an \u201cincomplete response\u201d to Cialis when taking it on an as-needed basis could return to normal erectile function when treated with the drug on a daily basis.
\nNormally, Cialis is prescribed at a starting dosage of 10 mg as needed, no more than once per day. It is also available in dosages of 2.5 mg, 5 mg, and 20 mg. In the study, men received either 5 mg Cialis for once-daily use, 2.5 mg titrated to 5 mg once daily (meaning men could adjust the dosage upward from 2.5 mg to 5 mg if necessary), or a placebo. The study was designed to find answers to two questions:<\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Does once-daily therapy with Cialis restore erectile function compared with placebo?<\/li>\n
  2. Does once-daily therapy with Cialis improve erectile function even if it doesn\u2019t completely restore it?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Treatment with the titrated 2.5 to 5 mg dose of Cialis and with the 5 mg dose resulted in significantly higher percentages of men with \u201cnormal\u201d erectile function based on a questionnaire known as the International Index of Erectile Function<\/a> (IIEF), as compared with men who took a placebo. 38.7% of men in the 2.5 to 5 mg dosage category fell in the normal IIEF range after 12 weeks, and 39.6% of men in the 5 mg dosage category fell in the nomral IIEF range after that time period. Only 12.1% of men taking placebo were in the normal IIEF range after 12 weeks.<\/p>\n

    In men who did not end up in the \u201cnormal\u201d IIEF range, improvements in IIEF scores were still statistically significant compared to men who received a placebo.<\/p>\n

    Cialis, like Levitra and Viagra, is known as a PDE5 inhibitor<\/a>. By inhibiting the action of PDE5, the smooth muscle cells lining the blood vessels supplying the penis allow greater blood flow in the presence of stimulation, and the result for many men is an erection sufficient for sexual activity. According to Dr. Kim<\/a>, PDE5 inhibitors are \u201chighly effective\u201d when taken on an as-needed basis, but responses to these drugs can vary widely. By quantifying how daily Cialis therapy resulted in improvements in erectile function, \u201cWe believe the study outcome will help prescribers make better informed decisions when treating their patients,” says Kim.<\/p>\n
