T<\/span>he association between marijuana use and male sexual function is still not fully understood, largely because reactions to cannabis vary widely from one individual to another. However, if you must indulge, moderation is probably the best course of action.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Although it\u2019s still listed as a Schedule 1 controlled substance federally, cannabis or marijuana has been approved for medical and recreational use in several states.<\/p>\n

The growing acceptance and availability of cannabis in the United States have raised questions about its effects on virtually every aspect of health. As of December 2018, 33 states and the District of Columbia had legalized marijuana in some form. Of those, 10 states and the District of Columbia had paved the way for recreational use of the drug in their jurisdictions.<\/p>\n

With nearly two-thirds of the states recognizing the benefits of pot as a medicine, questions inevitably arise over its effects on sexual function, a matter of keen concern to men and women everywhere. In a blog posting at PsychCentral.com<\/a>, R.Y. Langham explains that there is no one-size-fits-all answer to those questions, because reactions to the drug vary considerably from one individual to another.<\/p>\n

Mixed Messages?<\/h3>\n

Langham notes that an Australian study found that men who use marijuana at least once daily had a sharply higher incidence of premature ejaculation and orgasm problems. Yet another study found that marijuana use seemed to lower blood levels of testosterone, which can cause a loss of interest in sex. On the upside, modest use of marijuana can reduce inhibitions, which could be helpful to men who suffer from performance anxiety or are just plain uptight.<\/p>\n

Perhaps the clearest message came from a Turkish research study<\/a> that looked at the effects of various illicit drugs and alcohol on sexual function. Specifically, researchers looked at alcohol, cannabis, ecstasy, and opioids.<\/p>\n

While men using ecstasy and opioids showed profound levels of sexual dysfunction, including erectile dysfunction, sexual function in those using alcohol and cannabis was not significantly different from that of men in the control group who used no substances at all.<\/p>\n

If there\u2019s a conclusion to draw from all this, it\u2019s probably best to steer clear of all illicit drugs and alcohol. However, if you feel the need to loosen up a bit before sex, a modest — very modest — use of alcohol or cannabis probably would be the safest way to go.<\/p>\n
