Study Finds Statins and Blood Pressure Meds Don\u2019t Cause Erectile Dysfunction.<\/figcaption><\/figure> Erectile dysfunction has long been assumed to be a side effect of statins or blood pressure pills, but a new Canadian study published in the Canadian Journal of Cardiology<\/em> has found that\u2019s not the case.<\/p>\n

Although men with high blood pressure or high cholesterol who take medication to lower them can develop erectile dysfunction, it\u2019s not a causal effect from the medication.<\/p>\n

The causal effect is more likely tied to the high blood pressure and cholesterol, which may lead to erectile dysfunction.<\/p>\n

The study results<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Canadian study had 2,153 men with a mean age of 61.5 fill out a questionnaire about erectile dysfunction over the previous four weeks and then again 5.8 years later. The study, which included placebo groups, found that taking neither a blood pressure-lowering drug nor a cholesterol-lowering drug negatively affected erectile function.<\/p>\n

As Dr. John Mancini, professor of cardiology at the University of British Columbia said, \u201cPatients who express concern about erectile dysfunction should be assured about the lack of impact with statins or the combination of angiotensin receptor blocker\/thiazide. But perhaps more importantly, they need to be assessed more comprehensively and directed to and\/or instructed in the safe use of phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors when appropriate and when nitrates are not being used. The current study provides strong motivation for cardiologists to develop confidence and competence in the overlap between the quality of life as reflected by male sexual health and reduction of cardiovascular risk.\u201d<\/p>\n

Medications for erectile dysfunction<\/strong><\/p>\n

Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitors are erectile dysfunction drugs, such as Cialis. For men who don\u2019t take nitrates or certain other drugs, Cialis can often help treat erectile dysfunction.<\/p>\n
