The <em><a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2017\/05\/15\/porn-addiction-can-make-you-impotent\/\">New York Post<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>reports that one-half of all the men aged 40 to 70 will struggle with the disorder at some point in their lives. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.webmd.com\/erectile-dysfunction\/guide\/understanding-ed-causes#1\">WebMD<\/a> says some of the contributing factors that can lead to erectile dysfunction include:<em>\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>circulatory diseases<\/li>\n<li>depression and anxiety<\/li>\n<li>diabetes<\/li>\n<li>heart disease<\/li>\n<li>hormonal issues<\/li>\n<li>kidney disease<\/li>\n<li>nerve disorders<\/li>\n<li>obesity<\/li>\n<li>prescription drugs<\/li>\n<li>prostate enlargement<\/li>\n<li>smoking<\/li>\n<li>surgery<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthline.com\/health\/erectile-dysfunction\/common-causes-impotence\">Healthline<\/a> suggests erectile dysfunction can be caused by psychological, emotional, or physical disorders \u2013 or a combination of all three. ED itself can cause depression, low self-esteem, and stress. And, ironically, ED can also be caused by depression.<\/p>\n<p>But over the past few years, a number of studies have also linked impotence to the use and consumption of pornography. Some of the scientific literature has included:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25189834\">\u201cMasturbation and Pornography Use Among Coupled Heterosexual Men With Decreased Sexual Desire: How Many Roles of Masturbation?\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/19493295\">\u201cInternet-Based Brief Sex Therapy for Heterosexual Men with Sexual Dysfunctions: A Randomized Controlled Pilot Trial\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29069616\">\u201cThe Assessment and Treatment of Adult Heterosexual Men with Self-Perceived Problematic Pornography Use: A Review\u201d<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>These studies have increasingly defined a new clinical and cultural term called \u201cself-perceived pornography addiction\u201d (SPPA). While there are no formal disorders defined in clinical manuals, increasingly researchers appear to believe that this is a real disorder that leads ultimately to the male\u2019s inability to perform with a living sexual partner.<\/p>\n<h3>What Does the Science Say?<\/h3>\n<p>In a May 2017 article posted at <a href=\"https:\/\/bgr.com\/2017\/05\/15\/porn-impotence-research\/\">BGR.com<\/a>, a\u00a0writer reported on a study of 300 men being treated for erectile dysfunction in a San Diego urology clinic. The men answered a survey about their sexual activity, and a preponderance of those surveyed indicated that they watched an \u201cexcessive\u201d amount of pornography. The study seems to suggest a correlation between ED and porn.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5039517\/\">A 2016 review of nine studies<\/a> sought to quantify the real relationship between the rise in internet pornography and an increase in male impotence over the past decade. Particularly striking was the fact that male impotence has increased significantly in men under 40 \u2013 a population traditionally not plagued by this disorder.<\/p>\n<p>The literature review noted that prior to the widespread access to internet porn sites, there were fairly consistent rates of male impotence, typically around 2 percent in men under 40 years old. However, a global study tracking 2,737 sexually active men in Europe found that impotence had risen to 13 percent in men ages 40-80 and between 14 and 28 percent in men ages 18-40. A 2014 study of active duty male military personnel found erectile dysfunction rates of 33.2 percent. Again, in 2015, another study on men with a mean age of 36 found increased levels of ED along with \u201ca low desire for partnered sex&#8221;\u00a0 was a common observation in clinical practice among men seeking help for their excessive sexual behavior, who frequently \u2018use pornography and masturbate.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The study then sought to correlate the increase in male impotence by reviewing other causal factors. For example, has smoking increased in conjunction with ED? In fact, many of the other factors tied to impotence did not seem to increase at a corresponding rate with impotence.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25825\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25825\" style=\"width: 383px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/bigstock-Internet-Porn-Concept-59968742.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-25825\" src=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/bigstock-Internet-Porn-Concept-59968742-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"383\" height=\"255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/bigstock-Internet-Porn-Concept-59968742-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/bigstock-Internet-Porn-Concept-59968742-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/bigstock-Internet-Porn-Concept-59968742-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/bigstock-Internet-Porn-Concept-59968742-600x400.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.edrugstore.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/bigstock-Internet-Porn-Concept-59968742.jpg 900w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 383px) 100vw, 383px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-25825\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>The Kinsey Institute conducted one of the earliest research studies into porn&#8217;s effects.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.apa.org\/monitor\/apr03\/arousal.aspx\">American Psychological Association<\/a> points out that the earliest research into sex and the effect of pornography came from Kinsey Institute research in 2007. In that study, researchers determined that pornography did potentially lessen libido in men. It suggested that high exposure to porn increased the need to consume more \u201ckinky\u201d material to become aroused.<\/p>\n<p>Matthew Christman, M.D., a staff urologist with the San Diego Naval Medical Center, conducted the study. He suggested that impotence caused by excessive pornography is actually rooted in the same pleasure centers that are stimulated with drug abuse. Christman was quoted in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.upi.com\/Health_News\/2017\/05\/12\/Study-links-preference-for-pornography-with-real-world-sexual-dysfunction\/5641494620190\/\">UPI article<\/a> stating:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>Sexual behavior activates the same \u2018reward system\u2019 circuitry in the\u00a0brain as addictive drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamines,\u00a0which can result in self-reinforcing activity, or recurrent behaviors<\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Christman suggested that excessive porn watching builds up a tolerance for these images, which simply makes these men less likely to be interested in \u201cnormal\u201d or regular sexual activity.<\/p>\n<p>Too, the Christman study surmised that pornography could be setting up young men with unrealistic expectations of what real sex entails. The UPI quoted Joseph Alukal, M.D., of New York University as saying, \u201cThey believe they\u2019re supposed to be able to do what goes on in these movies, and when they can\u2019t, it causes a great deal of anxiety.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anxiety, of course, is yet another cause of impotence in men.<\/p>\n<h3>Not Everyone Concurs<\/h3>\n<p>There are always two sides to every story, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_nz\/article\/mgy9pp\/a-few-hard-truths-about-porn-and-erectile-dysfunction\">Vice<\/a> author Kris Taylor disputes these studies as taking a leap of faith between two unrelated issues \u2013 porn and ED. Calling it \u201chysteria,\u201d the writer suggests the literature does not support the link; citing research from 2015 called, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25816904\">\u201cIs Pornography Use Associated with Sexual Difficulties and Dysfunctions Among Younger Heterosexual Men?\u201d<\/a> the author points out that the study concluded that \u201ccontrary to raising public concerns, pornography does not seem to be a significant risk factor for younger men\u2019s desire, erectile, or orgasmic difficulties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>David Ley in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psychologytoday.com\/blog\/women-who-stray\/201308\/erectile-dysfunction-myth\">Psychology Today<\/a><\/em> mirrored the same sentiment and suggested the published research is too anecdotal to be accurate and that more research certainly needs to be done.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, Taylor\u2019s article noted that the \u201ctraditional\u201d causes of erectile dysfunction haven\u2019t changed, from depression to medication, diabetes, and heart disease. Nevertheless, Taylor points out one undeniable fact: one in every four men under 40 will seek treatment this year for ED.
