But a special technology called \u201cintensity modulated proton therapy\u201d helps minimize erectile dysfunction by using more precision to target the cancerous tumors. <\/p>\n

By limiting the radiation\u2019s effects on other parts of the body, erectile dysfunction is much less likely to occur.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a huge improvement on previous technologies,\u201d says Dr. David Gaffney, who serves as both the senior director of clinical research for the Huntsman Cancer Institute and the vice chairman of the University of Utah\u2019s Department of Radiation Oncology. \u201cThe benefit to the patient is that normal structures receive less radiation while the tumor receives the same or perhaps [a] higher radiation dose.\u201d<\/p>\n

Unfortunately, the proton therapy isn\u2019t right for every man with prostate cancer, but Gaffney estimates that between 10 and 20% of people who receive radiation treatment could benefit from it.<\/p>\n

Prostate cancer treatments that cause erectile dysfunction<\/strong><\/p>\n

Although prostate cancer itself doesn\u2019t cause erectile dysfunction, several types of treatment for the disease can. These include hormone therapy, surgery to remove the entire prostate gland, and radiation.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s very common for at least some degree of erectile dysfunction to occur right after surgery, but the severity of the erectile dysfunction depends on the how skillful the surgeon is, how advanced the cancer was and the type of surgery that was performed.<\/p>\n

For men whose surgeon performed a nerve-sparing technique to spare the nerve that causes erections, erectile dysfunction drugs, such as Viagra, Levitra and Cialis, may help. But for men who underwent a non-nerve-sparing surgery, even Viagra, Cialis or Levitra probably won\u2019t be able to help them get erections.<\/p>\n

Although erectile dysfunction may not be a problem for some men after prostate surgery, they may experience \u2018dry\u201d orgasms in which no ejaculate is produced.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
