People undergoing stem cell transplantation may experience a decrease in sexual function and desire, primarily due to the preparatory steps required for the procedure.<\/em><\/p>\n

Research from the City of Hope Cancer Research Hospital indicates that preparative procedures and complications from stem cell transplants could lead to sexual dysfunction (e.g., impotence or decreased libido) in both men and women.<\/p>\n

The procedure, which replaces unhealthy cells with healthy ones using blood or bone marrow from the patient or a donor, is most commonly used to treat diseases like lymphoma, myeloma and leukemia.<\/p>\n

Why Does Sexual Health Diminish?<\/h3>\n

There are a couple reasons that sexual dysfunction may increase after stem cell transplantation.<\/p>\n

First, donor cells might attack the recipient\u2019s healthy cells. This is called graft-versus-host diseases (GVHD). Both men and women suffer from GVHD and researchers found that nearly 50% of those who underwent stem cell transplantation are still sexually inactive three years after the procedure.<\/p>\n

For men, the study found that complications from GVHD led to a 21% decrease in sexual fantasies and a 24% decrease in orgasm quality.<\/p>\n

For women, there was a 27% decline in sexual satisfaction and a 27% decline in sexual arousal.<\/p>\n

Second, total body radiation (preparation before the stem cell transplant) has been found to decrease sexual health in men, but not in women.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s interesting to note that total body radiation appeared to have no effect on women\u2019s sexual function and that there was actually an increase in women\u2019s sexual activity after the procedure. Why? One theory is that women tend to experience an improvement in the quality of life after getting the transplant, increasing their sexual activity.<\/p>\n

Both men and women should talk to their doctors before and after undergoing stem cell transplantation to discuss sexual health.<\/p>\n
