The answer is in the drug’s history. On November 21, 2003 Cialis obtained FDA approval ending a 5-year monopoly that Pfizer’s Viagra had on the erectile dysfunction market. <\/p>\n

Here’s a look at the steps that led up to the release of Cialis as an ED medication:<\/p>\n

Patent pending<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 1993, Icos, who manufactures Cialis studied a PDE5 enzyme inhibiter called IC351, realized the drug could treat impotence.<\/p>\n

Icos received its first patent for IC351 in 1994 and clinical trials began in 1995. Two years later, Icos filed a new application with the FDA under the name Cialis.<\/p>\n

In 1998, Icos merged with Eli Lilly and Co. and began to work on making Cialis mainstream for men suffering with ED.<\/p>\n

Final testing concluded in 2002. Results showed Cialis stayed in a man’s bloodstream for up to 36 hours. That same year, Europe approved Cialis as a prescription drug.<\/p>\n

On November 21, 2003, Cialis became available in the United States, after gaining FDA approval.<\/p>\n

Present day findings<\/strong><\/p>\n

Today, Cialis isn’t just used to treat erectile dysfunction; it’s also approved to treat BPH. BPH is a condition that causes an enlarged prostate in older men, which often leads to difficulty urinating.<\/p>\n

Studies<\/a> have also linked tadalafil, the active ingredient in Cialis, with potential cancer fighting properties, with specific promise dealing with mouth and throat cancers.<\/p>\n

While Cialis can treat other conditions, it’s mainly prescribed to treat ED. <\/p>\n
