With the increasing value of prescription drugs in America, many thieves who used to make a living by stealing laptops and expensive fragrances are now turning to the pharmaceutical industry for a living. One theft in March, 2010 netted the crooks $75 million in drugs<\/a> from manufacturer Eli Lilly’s storage facility (pictured below) in Connecticut.<\/p>\n

This is a very frightening trend that seems to be on the rise. Most likely, the reason that thieves are now targeting pharmaceuticals is because they are much lighter per dollar amount. For example, a lap top weighing 10 pounds will be worth far less than ten pounds of high quality prescription pain killers. This makes prescription drugs the “perfect crime” for highway thieves. <\/p>\n

But the biggest problem with this trend is not the drug companies’ lost profits, it’s the fact that these thieves sell the drugs back to consumers, often after they have been stored incorrectly and have lost their potency. Most of the drugs are sold on the black market or over the internet for heavy discounts, but many of them actually make their way back into drugstores where they are purchased by unsuspecting consumers.\"Eli <\/p>\n

A report on this phenomenon recently appeared in the Wall Street Journal<\/em><\/a>, which described the details of a few drug thefts, and the aftereffects. One case involved Florida resident Servando Gomez. When authorities raided his home in October, they found more than $10 million in stolen prescription drugs. Authorities inferred that Mr. Gomez had stolen these drugs while they were in transit on a freight truck. This is said to be a common practice among highway thieves who now turn more and more to the prescription drug trade. <\/p>\n

This is a huge problem because, if drugs are stored improperly and then sold back to consumers, it could result in major illness or death. The Wall Street Journal report noted that several diabetes patients were severely harmed last year after taking stolen insulin. The insulin had not been refrigerated as necessary, thereby rendering it useless. Hence, the patients thought that they were being treated for their condition, when in reality their blood-sugar levels were spiraling out of control. <\/p>\n
