S<\/span>exually transmitted diseases in the United States totaled nearly 2.3 million cases in 2017, up for the fourth consecutive year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention notes that older Americans are not immune from this plague and must continue to practice safe sex.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

Sexually transmitted diseases have been on the rise in recent years, particularly among older Americans.<\/p>\n

Medical science has developed new treatments that allow men and women suffering from sexual dysfunction to get back into the game again. However, in their haste to resume sexual activity, it seems some are forgetting about the importance of safe sex, leading to a spike in sexually transmitted diseases.<\/p>\n

In its annual Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance Report<\/em>,<\/a> released in the fall of 2018, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced that STDs hit an all-time high in 2017, the latest year for which data is available. The annual report put the STD tally for 2017 at nearly 2.3 million cases of chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. It noted that the increase in these diseases was seen in multiple populations but was particularly notable among men who have sex with other men.<\/p>\n

\u2018Sliding Backward\u2019<\/h3>\n

In a news release that accompanied the annual STD report, Jonathan Mermin, M.D., director of the CDC’s National Center for HIV\/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB Prevention, said, \u201cWe are sliding backward.\u00a0It is evident the systems that identify, treat, and ultimately prevent STDs are strained to near-breaking point.\u201d<\/p>\n

As previously noted, the increase in STDs was observed in multiple populations, including older Americans. It continued a disquieting trend that was readily apparent in the previous year’s reports, summing up STD data for 2016. Reacting to the CDC’s STDs report on 2016, Shannon Dowler, M.D., an associate chief quality officer for Mission Health in Asheville, North Carolina, reported that recent years have witnessed a steady uptrend in STDs among older men and women. She attributes this phenomenon to multiple factors, including \u201cthe ability to maintain sexual function longer with pharmaceutical assistance, changes in immunity and weakening mucosal tissue, and accessibility in community living . . . .\u201d<\/p>\n

Dowler Stars in Rap Video<\/h3>\n

As part of her efforts to increase public awareness of the problem among older patients, Dowler produced and starred in a rap video stressing the importance of \u201csafe sex, baby,\u201d no matter what your age. The video is available for viewing at YouTube.com under the title \u201cSTDs Never Get Old.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

The increase in STDs among older men and women is not just an American problem. Arti Patel, an online journalist for Canada\u2019s Global News<\/a>, reports that seniors in the Great White North are increasingly vulnerable to STDs because they typically disregard the need for condoms.<\/p>\n

STDs Soar in Canada Too<\/h3>\n

This inattention to the importance of safe sex has brought with it a big increase in STDs. In 1998, Health Canada documented 39,372 cases of chlamydia, the most commonly reported STD in Canada. In 2015, the latest year for which national data is available, the number of chlamydia diagnoses had nearly tripled to 116,499. Gonorrhea infections nearly quadrupled from 5,076 in 1998 to 19,845 in 2015, and infectious syphilis cases soared from 501 in 1998 to 3,321 in 2015.<\/p>\n

Clearly, STDs have no respect for national boundaries or advanced age. Men and women who now are able to enjoy sex into their golden years must stay vigilant against the threat of infection by practicing safe sex at all times.<\/p>\n
