\"\"<\/a>The blockbuster Viagra has provided a solution for millions of men dealing with sexual problems, but for women no such solution exists.\u00a0 At least, not yet.\u00a0 When Pfizer came out with their simple blue pill, they converted erectile dysfunction<\/a> from a taboo topic into mainstream conversations.\u00a0 The drug was created in 1998, and women are still waiting for the same simple \u201ccure.\u201d\u00a0 A company is currently working on a gel, which they believe will help women just like Viagra helped men.<\/p>\n

The new company on the block<\/strong>
\nBioSante, a pharmaceutical company, says Libigel can help women deal with a condition known as hypoactive sexual disorder, which is the loss of sexual desire.\u00a0 The company released a statement recently saying they will seek approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration this year.<\/p>\n

To get approval, the company must show the drug not only works, but is safe.\u00a0 This is the problem several other competitors have had.\u00a0 Two other big drug companies, Proctor and Gamble and Boehringer Ingelheim<\/a>, were working on similar products but didn\u2019t move forward with FDA approval because of safety concerns.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>How Libigel works<\/strong>
\nWhile it\u2019s referred to as the female Viagra<\/a>, it doesn\u2019t work the same.\u00a0 For starters this is a gel, not a pill.\u00a0 The gel contains testosterone, which has not been approved to safely increase desire in women.\u00a0 It is one of the \u201coff-label\u201d uses of testosterone, but at this point there is no approved treatment including the male hormone in U.S. Libigel could be the first.<\/p>\n

Women react<\/strong>
\nWhen asked about the potential of a cream increasing sexual desire, women had several comments:<\/p>\n

\u201cI would be interested in checking it out,\u201d Marcia Lovez said.\u00a0 \u201cAs an older woman, my desires have slowed a bit, but I wouldn\u2019t use anything that wasn’t safe.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cMen get a pill to swallow and we get a messy gel?\u201d Susan Reit said.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m not so sure about it, but I would be interested in learning more if it\u2019s approved by the FDA.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
