\"\"<\/a>A new study, done by researchers at Johns Hopkins, shows soldiers that are immediately treated for pain are more likely to return to work.\u00a0 In many cases there aren\u2019t treatment facilities available to treat soldiers, so they are sent out away from the battleground for treatment.\u00a0 These soldiers are less likely to return to their post, but a new study shows immediate treatment may help retain soldiers.<\/p>\n

Medical issues facing soldiers<\/strong>
\nSoldiers face a whole host of circumstances<\/a> while fighting overseas, many of their medical problems are pain related.\u00a0 Most soldiers complain of leg, back and head\/neck pain<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In the study, 107 out of 113 soldiers suffering from noncombat-related pain were able to return to duty after being treated at the Ibna Sina Hospital in Baghdad between October 2005 and September 2006.<\/p>\n

In contrast, a previous study showed that of 162 soldiers with similar kinds of pain evacuated from Iraq for treatment at Walter Reed Army Medical Center in Washington, D.C., or the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany between April 2003 and July 2004, only three returned to active duty.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a>\u201cThe main factor seems to be rapid diagnosis and treatment of pain syndromes,\u201d says study co-author Colonel Steven Cohen, M.D., of the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.<\/p>\n

\u201cEstablishing pain treatment centers in combat areas gets care to soldiers fast and could dramatically increase the military\u2019s ability to maintain troop levels and succeed militarily in places like Iraq,\u201d says Cohen.<\/p>\n

Other factors<\/strong>
\nOnce a solider is set out of the combat zone, its difficult to send them back.\u00a0 For logistic and economic reasons, soldiers aren\u2019t typically sent back.\u00a0 However, Cohen says soldiers that are treated in the field are more likely to lean on their fellow friends for help and recover.<\/p>\n

\u201cSoldiers who stay with their units build on the strong ties with those units and wish to remain. Those bonds weaken when military personnel are stateside with their families, making theses soldiers even less amenable to returning to the field,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
