Mention erectile dysfunction drugs, and most folks, both men and women, think immediately of Viagra, Cialis, or both. Multimillion-dollar advertising campaigns have imprinted these brand names and the iconic images — blue diamond-shaped pills and twin bathtubs — with which they\u2019re associated on the brains of most Americans.<\/p>\n

Some astute observers of the market for ED drugs might also mention Levitra, which was the first alternative to Viagra to come to market after Pfizer\u2019s little blue pill.<\/p>\n

However, the odds are good that Staxyn and Stendra, two lesser-known ED medications, have made little impression on the minds of most consumers. Unless, of course, they are men who\u2019ve been forced to look for alternatives after discovering that Viagra, Cialis, or even Levitra didn\u2019t provide adequate relief from their ED symptoms.<\/p>\n

All Are PDE5 Inhibitors<\/h3>\n

All five of these brand-name drugs belong to a family of medications known collectively as PDE5 inhibitors, so called because they temporarily sideline an enzyme known as phosphodiesterase-5 that can compromise blood flow to the penis.<\/p>\n

While all these medications are alike in many respects, each has its own distinctive chemical formula. What works for one man may not work as well for another. For this reason, men facing a serious decline in erectile function owe it to themselves to try all of the drugs available to them before deciding which delivers the best results. It may be, of course, that all work equally well, in which case you\u2019re likely to consider price tags before picking the one for you.<\/p>\n

Staxyn Dissolves Under Tongue<\/h3>\n

Of Staxyn and Stendra, the first to hit the U.S. market was Staxyn, which won approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in June 2010. Its active ingredient is vardenafil hydrochloride, the same active ingredient used in Levitra. However, Staxyn comes in a 10-milligram orosoluble tablet that quickly dissolves when placed on or under the tongue. Thus it can be taken without water whenever the need arises.<\/p>\n

Staxyn is sold in a convenient, easy-to-carry blister-pack that holds four to eight orosoluble tablets. Once you\u2019ve removed a tablet from the blister pack, it should be taken immediately. Expect results in 60 minutes or less. The drug\u2019s effects are said to last eight hours, although some users say it works even longer for them. Staxyn can be taken with or without food.<\/p>\n

Fewer Side Effects<\/h3>\n

Staxyn and Levitra, both of which are co-marketed by Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals and GlaxoSmithKline, are said to have fewer side effects than Viagra or Cialis. However, they still can cause them, although most are mild and tend to disappear upon continued use. Common side effects include back pain, dizziness, flushing, headache, indigestion, nausea, and runny or stuffy nose.<\/p>\n

Although rare, Staxyn has been known to cause more adverse effects in some who have used it. These side effects include an erection that lasts for more than four hours or sudden changes in color vision. If you experience either of these symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.<\/p>\n

Vivus Inc., a small pharmaceutical company based in Mountain View, California, manufactures and markets Stendra. The drug\u2019s active ingredient is avanafil, yet another member of the family of PDE5 inhibitors.<\/p>\n

Stendra, which is sold in tablets of 50, 100, and 200 milligrams each, is one of the fastest-acting ED drugs on the market. Take a 100- or 200-milligram tablet roughly 15 minutes before sexual activity, or for a more leisurely approach, opt for a 50-milligram tablet about 30 minutes before sex. The effects of Stendra can last for up to six hours.<\/p>\n

Minimize Alcohol Intake<\/h3>\n

Stendra can be taken with or without food. However, alcohol consumption should be minimized when taking the drug, because too much alcohol — anything more than three shots of whiskey or three glasses of wine — can increase the likelihood and intensity of side effects. This is good advice whether you\u2019re taking Stendra or not.<\/p>\n

As with Staxyn, Stendra\u2019s more common side effects are mild and tend to fade as you continue to use the drug. These include back pain, constipation, diarrhea, dizziness, flushing, headache, mild cold- or flu-like symptoms, and upset stomach.<\/p>\n

The drug\u2019s more serious side effects, while rare, can include a sudden decrease or loss of hearing and\/or vision and an erection that lasts for more than four hours. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience these adverse effects.<\/p>\n

Heed Doctor\u2019s Advice<\/h3>\n

Do not take Stendra if your doctor has advised you to refrain from strenuous sexual activity or if you are taking nitrate-based drugs such as those prescribed to treat angina and hard-to-control hypertension.<\/p>\n

As previously noted, both Staxyn and Stendra are classified as PDE5 inhibitors, a category that also includes Viagra, Cialis, and Levitra. These drugs are designed to treat erectile dysfunction that is caused by insufficient blood flow to the penis and will have little to no effect on ED symptoms that are psychological in origin.<\/p>\n

However, vascular-related ED is the most common form of male impotence, accounting for up to 80 percent of all cases. How Erections Occur<\/h3>\n

To better understand how PDE5 inhibitors work, you should first understand the basic mechanics of erectile function, which begins in the brain. Feelings of sexual desire or physical stimuli to the male genitals signal the brain to dispatch copious amounts of nitric oxide en route to the genitals. On its way, the nitric oxide triggers secondary chemical reactions, one of which produces a substance called cyclic guanosine monophosphate, or cGMP.<\/p>\n

To prepare the arteries supplying blood to the penis for erection, cGMP signals the smooth muscle tissue lining those arteries to relax. This process dilates the arteries facilitating a robust flow of blood into the penis.<\/p>\n

So what does the PDE5 enzyme have to do with all this? One of the enzyme\u2019s primary tasks is to break down cGMP, which in a man with no vascular problems presents no real problem. The body will simply produce more cGMP to replace that which is broken down. However, in men whose vascular systems are compromised, the PDE5 enzyme kills off cGMP faster than the body can replace it. This can make it difficult to get an erection or end it prematurely.<\/p>\n

Erectile Function Temporarily Restored<\/h3>\n

The PDE5 inhibitors temporarily disable the enzyme for anywhere from four to 36 hours, depending on the specific medication you\u2019re taking. This gives men with erection problems a window of time during which they can regain near-normal erectile function. When the drug wears off, the man may no longer be able to achieve erection.<\/p>\n
