Smokers Can Expect Tougher Life In Old Age

Studies have shown that smoking shortens lifespan, but a new study reveals that it may also make daily life more difficult in old age.

The study observed more than 1,600 men over a period of 26 years.  Men who had smoked heavily in their middle-age years were found to have more problems physically functioning in their older years.  Increased difficulties were noticed even with simple activities like carrying groceries, climbling stairs, and bathing.  These decreased physical abilities were also noted in men who had smoked heavily at middle age, but had later quit smoking.

The results of this study, published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, give even more reason for smokers to quit as early as possible.
